Dissertations in economic and business history in Nordic countries in 2016

2018

The discussion article by Ekberg and Jes Iversen in this number of the Scandinavian Economic History Review raises a number of important questions on the present state of business history research in the Nordic countries. To a certain extent, these concerns are generalisable to the wider economic history community in the Nordic countries, especially as regards the lack of relevant teaching and challenges in recruitment. Ekberg and Iversen suggest that a possible solution might be to intensify Nordic collaboration. Time and again the need for such collaboration has been raised as an issue, also on the pages of this journal (Ojala & Sogner, 2015). Nevertheless, the wake-up call by Ekberg and …

Path integral solution for nonlinear systems under parametric Poissonian white noise input

2016

Abstract In this paper the problem of the response evaluation in terms of probability density function of nonlinear systems under parametric Poisson white noise is addressed. Specifically, extension of the Path Integral method to this kind of systems is introduced. Such systems exhibit a jump at each impulse occurrence, whose value is obtained in closed form considering two general classes of nonlinear multiplicative functions. Relying on the obtained closed form relation liking the impulses amplitude distribution and the corresponding jump response of the system, the Path Integral method is extended to deal with systems driven by parametric Poissonian white noise. Several numerical applica…

Exact Voronoi diagram of smooth convex pseudo-circles: General predicates, and implementation for ellipses

2013

International audience; We examine the problem of computing exactly the Voronoi diagram (via the dual Delaunay graph) of a set of, possibly intersecting, smooth convex \pc in the Euclidean plane, given in parametric form. Pseudo-circles are (convex) sites, every pair of which has at most two intersecting points. The Voronoi diagram is constructed incrementally. Our first contribution is to propose robust and efficient algorithms, under the exact computation paradigm, for all required predicates, thus generalizing earlier algorithms for non-intersecting ellipses. Second, we focus on \kcn, which is the hardest predicate, and express it by a simple sparse $5\times 5$ polynomial system, which a…

Radiation Shielding Study of Advanced Data and Power Management Systems (ADPMS) Housing Using Geant4

2008

The tendency to reduce the spacecraft mass covers nowadays all components of the spacecraft. One potential target is to reduce the mass of electronics and its housings. The use of composite materials, especially CFRP is a well known and vastly used approach to mass reduction. In cost reduction the use of standard (non-space qualified) electronics has increased. These commercial circuits and other components cannot tolerate as high radiation levels as space qualified components. Therefore the use of standard electronics components poses challenge in terms of the radiation protection capability of the ADPMS housings. The main goal of this study is to give an insight on the radiation shielding…

A new representation of power spectral density and correlation function by means of fractional spectral moments

2009

In this paper, a new perspective for the representation of both the power spectral density and the correlation function by a unique class of function is introduced. We define the moments of order gamma (gamma being a complex number) of the one sided power spectral density and we call them Fractional Spectral Moments (FSM). These complex quantities remain finite also in the case in which the ordinary spectral moments diverge, and are able to represent the whole Power Spectral Density and the corresponding correlation function.

Controllable Solid Propellant Rocket Motor Stability: Deep and Rapid Variable Thrust Operations

2008

When flow and combustion processes couple with the acoustic modes of the combustion chamber, the solid rocket motors experience unsteady gas motion and associated thrust oscillation and motor vibration. The operations of the variable nozzle introduce relevant dynamic changes in the chamber flow and combustion. This article proposes a non-linear approach for the analysis of the effects of severe nozzle manoeuvres on the controllable solid rocket motor stability and provides the evidence that the acoustic wave amplitude evolution is influenced by the nozzle manoeuvre severity, shape and direction. The additional complexity in the problem of the combustion stability analysis introduced by the …

Singularities of rational Bézier curves

2001

We prove that if an nth degree rational Bezier curve has a singular point, then it belongs to the two (n − 1)th degree rational Bezier curves defined in the (n − 1)th step of the de Casteljau algorithm. Moreover, both curves are tangent at the singular point. A procedure to construct Bezier curves with singularities of any order is given.  2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

An isoperimetric type problem for primitive Pythagorean hodograph curves

2012

An isoperimetric type problem for primitive Pythagorean hodograph curves is studied. We show how to compute, for each possible degree, the Pythagorean hodograph curve of a given perimeter enclosing the greatest area. We also discuss the existence and construction of smooth solutions, obtaining a relationship with an interesting sequence of Appell polynomials.

An annihilator-based strategy for the automatic detection of exponential polynomial spaces in subdivision

2021

Abstract Exponential polynomials are essential in subdivision for the reconstruction of specific families of curves and surfaces, such as conic sections and quadric surfaces. It is well known that if a linear subdivision scheme is able to reproduce a certain space of exponential polynomials, then it must be level-dependent, with rules depending on the frequencies (and eventual multiplicities) defining the considered space. This work discusses a general strategy that exploits annihilating operators to locally detect those frequencies directly from the given data and therefore to choose the correct subdivision rule to be applied. This is intended as a first step towards the construction of se…
