Freejazz afrikanamerikkalaisen nationalistisen identiteetin ilmentäjänä 1960-luvun Yhdysvalloissa
2011

Tutki…
"Indépendance Cha Cha": African pop music since the independence era
2010
Investigating why Latin American music came to be the soundtrack of the independence era, this contribution offers an overview of musical developments and cultural politics in certain sub-Saharan African countries since the 1960s. Focusing first on how the governments of newly independent African states used musical styles and musicians to support their nation-building projects, the article then looks at musicians' more recent perspectives on the independence era.
Glimmering utopias: 50 years of African film
2010
The history of African film began in the 1960s with the independence of the colonies. Despite all kinds of political and economic difficulties, numerous films have been made since then, featuring wide-ranging processes of consolidation, differentiation and transformation which were characteristic of post-colonial sub-Saharan Africa. However, these feature films should not merely be viewed as back references to specifically African problems. The glimmering fictions are imagination spaces. They preserve ideas about how the post-colonial circumstances should be approached. Seen from this perspective, the history of African film may be studied as a history of African utopias. Die Geschichte des…
Victims at the Central African Republic's Special Criminal Court
2021
The Central African Republic's Special Criminal Court (SCC), the latest hybrid criminal tribunal, may be considered an important legal development concerning victims of mass atrocities in international criminal justice mechanisms due to certain characteristics. Yet there is no academic commentary on victims at the SCC; this piece seeks to fill the gap. First it considers restorative justice as a general framework for victims’ roles and rights in criminal justice in contexts of mass atrocities. Second, victim matters at the SCC are examined: victim protection, victims as civil parties, and reparations. Overall, this paper argues that provisions on victims’ roles and rights contained in SCC i…
André Brink and the Afrikaner Heritage
2004
This paper shows how André Brink, dissident Afrikaans writer, tried to write against his heritage. The most visible strategy consisted in redefining Afrikanerdom as dissidence and as africanity. The notion of betrayal was systematically reversed so that the Afrikaners who supported the Afrikaner regime were presented as the real traitors. Yet dissidence was not an easy position for Brink and both he and his heroes had ambivalent positions.

2009
On the eve of the democratic elections scheduled in South Africa in 2009, this collection of essays analyses the many ways in which South Africans have been trying to heal the wounds of apartheid, as advocated in Nelson Mandela’s famous 1994 speech, delivered at the dawn of the ‘ new ’ South Africa. The articles encompass such diverse fields as politics, literature, cinema, welfare policies or education, and they all seek to explore the sea change which totally reshaped South African identity in the last fifteen years that followed the demise of apartheid. The notion of ‘ healing the wounds’ is used both as a pretext and as a focal point to build up as complete a picture as possible of Sout…
