Research on Acute Toxicity and the Behavioral Effects of Methanolic Extract from Psilocybin Mushrooms and Psilocin in Mice
2015
The pharmacological activities and acute toxicity of the psilocin (PC) and dried residues of the crude extracts of psychotropic mushrooms were investigated in mice. The hallucinogenic substances were effectively isolated, by using methanol, from the species of Psilocybe semilanceata and Pholiotina cyanopus, that were collected in the north-east region of Poland. The chemical analysis of these extracts, which was performed by liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry detection (LC-MS), indicated the presence of psilocin and other hallucinogenic substances, including indolealkylamines and their phosphorylated analogues. When the pure psilocin or fungal extracts were used, slight difference…
Propagation of Calendula maritima Guss. (Asteraceae) through Biotechnological Techniques for Possible Usage in Phytotherapy
2022
The genus Calendula (Asteraceae) includes several species that are renowned for their therapeutic properties and/or use as ingredients in the preparation of cosmetics. The rare and critically endangered sea marigold, Calendula maritima Guss., an endemic species from Western Sicily, has also been recognized as a potential “farm plant species” for several important compounds used in cosmetics. However, the few remnant populations of this species are currently threatened with extinction because of several factors, such as hybridization with the congeneric species Calendula suffruticosa subsp. fulgida (Raf.) Guadagno and anthropogenic disturbance of its habitat. Therefore, in order to preserve …
Data from: Effects of undergrowth removal and edge proximity on ground beetles and vascular plants in urban boreal forests
2019
Urban forests are regularly managed for human safety and aesthetic reasons, but they are crucial habitat for many species. Removals of undergrowth occur commonly in these forests, yet the ecological consequences of these operations are poorly understood. We sampled ground beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae) and vascular plants along 20-m edge gradients in Finnish urban forests, in five stands treated 0.5−2.5 years earlier with undergrowth removal and in five untreated stands. We hypothesized that undergrowth removal and edge proximity would benefit opportunistic and open-habitat species, whereas shady-habitat species would be affected negatively. (1) Regarding carabids, diversity and evenness i…

2016
International audience; Between 1927 and 1930, Pirro Marconi investigated a small rectangular structure near house Filippazzo, in the central urban area of Akragas. The presence of a bothros and fragments of female figures with stephane suggested the presence of a small sanctuary or themenos for chthonic deities. The little news published by Marconi and the vague indication of location made us forget the existence of this sanctuary for many years. However, a survey carried out in 2016 allowed to identify the remains of Marconi’s structure, partly covered by ground. At the same time, other little-known structures have been identified. In some cases, their function is still unknown.
2018
The study considers some louteria from Agrigento (from the Sanctuary of Zeus Olympios and the so-called Sanctuary of chthonic deities), dated from the sixth to the fifth century BC. In particular we propose a reading of the images that decorate these basins in relation to the sacred contexts in which they were used, paying particular attention to a series of louteria with running quadrigae and winged figures and an example depicting the transport of Achilles’ weapons by the Nereids. Thus symbolic imagerie which refers to the rituals and cults practised in these sacred spaces is reconstructed.
2019
The sanctuary of Zeus Olympios at Agrigento has been not perceived in its entirety till now. As a matter of fact, while the temple attracted the scholars’ interest, due to its outstanding features, the buildings surrounding it were referred to residential (W), military (S) and civic (“agora” E/NE) functions. Besides, a sacellum and a pool on the south-eastern side were attributed to the age of Timoleon, later than the main architectural phase. However, the new stratigraphical data allow us to refer all the structures in the southern area to a coherent building program carried out from 480 to 450 BC Starting from this evidence, the paper aims at redefining the whole context, putting it in ur…
The paper examines the water supply and disposal in the central-western part of the Collina dei Templi at Agrigento. Starting from the current investigations by the team of the University of Palermo in t…
