The effects of laboratory ageing on rheological and fracture characteristics of different rubberised bitumens

Ageing of bituminous materials can result in loss of the durability of a flexible pavement. Using rubberised bitumens can enhance pavement performance while at the same time it solves a serious waste disposal problem. Combining Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) additives with rubberised bitumens reduces the difficulties associated with the production of asphalt mixtures using this modified binder. AbstractThermo-rheological characteristics of unmodified and modified bitumen have significant impacts on the mechanical response of asphalt. This study investigates the impacts of an organic and a chemical Warm Mix Asphalt additive on bitumen thermo-rheological and mechanical characteristics. Physical Cross Links in Amorphous PET, Influence of Cooling Rate and Ageing

A Continuous Cooling Transformation (CCT) procedure can be used to distinguish the initial “state” of the amorphous PET samples produced upon solidification from the melt at different cooling rates. The material frozen at this stage behaves as a rubber when brought above the Tg due to the onset of physical cross links. The rubber is not a stable network, however, since physical cross links may eventually dissolve. Their size distribution, and possibly their number, depend on cooling rate and ageing. Influence of long-term ageing in solution containing chloride ions on the passivity and the corrosion resistance of duplex stainless steels

Abstract The influence of long-term ageing in NaCl on the passivity and the electrochemical behavior of UNS S32304 is studied. The passive film thickness, the Cr/Fe ratio and the chloride content were significantly increased after ageing. The chloride distribution depends on residual stresses, sample microstructure and surface preparation. Local electrochemical measurements revealed that pitting potentials are between 250–550 mV vs. SCE after electropolishing. The higher the chloride content, the lower the local pitting potential. It was also shown that the presence of chloride was balanced by the enrichment in chromium after ageing. Then no pitting potential could be measured.

Effect of hydrothermal ageing on the thermal and delamination fracture behaviour of CFRP composites

Abstract This work investigates the hydrothermal ageing behaviour of a carbon fibre reinforced laminate and its epoxy matrix in bulk conditions. A model DGEBA epoxy is employed, and water uptake and dynamic mechanical thermal (DMTA) analyses have been performed on both the composites and bulk resin. Fracture toughness of the bulk resin has been measured, evidencing a substantially unmodified critical stress intensity factor KIC, although the evidence of plasticisation effects given by DMTA. Hygrothermal ageing of reprocessed polylactide

[EN] The influence of an accelerated hygrothermal ageing simulation test on a commercial PLA and its three subsequent mechanically-reprocessed materials was studied. The analysis was focused on the water diffusion kinetics and the physico-chemical changes induced by the hygrothermal degradation. Water diffusion proceeded faster than chain relaxation processes, as defined by a Case II absorption model. It was proved that the water diffusion rate decreased with subsequent reprocessing cycles and increased with higher hygrothermal ageing temperatures. Long-term ISO 23936-2 sweet oil ageing of HNBR

Abstract A hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) compound is subjected to ageing in a simulated oil and gas environment in accordance with ISO 23936-2 standard at two elevated temperatures (130 °C and 150 °C) for a period of up to 9 months. Shore D hardness, thermal expansion, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, compression and compression set (CS) measurements are made before and after the chemical exposure. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are promising third generation photovoltaic devices given their potential low cost and high efficiency. The Influence of Ageing on the Impact Damage of Carbon Epoxy Composites

Abstract This study looks into the influence of ageing on the carbon epoxy composite when impact is applied. Three different stacking sequences were investigated, one sequence with the classic lay-up, whereas the other two have quasi-isotropic and quasi-homogeneous behaviour. The specimens were aged up to 2100 h (3 months) in a climatic chamber with a temperature of 70 °C and relative humidity of 85%. The mass was measured regularly during the hygrothermal ageing treatment. An aging evaluation of the bearing performances of glass fiber composite laminate in salt spray fog environment

The aim of the present paper is to assess the bearing performance evolution of pinned, glass-composite laminates due to environmental aging in salt-spray fog tests. Glass fibers/epoxy pinned laminates were exposed for up to 60 days in salt-spraying, foggy environmental conditions (according to ASTM B117 standard).
