insecte senescence : interactions between survival, reproduction and immunity

2020

Senescence is an almost universal process in multi-cellular organisms corresponding to an age-dependent decline of reproductive, immune and survival performance. Among the theories explaining such a phenomenon, the disposable soma theory of ageing proposes that senescence is caused by a resource allocation trade-off between reproduction and somatic maintenance. Hence, high early-life allocation to reproduction should be achieved at the expense somatic defences, including immunity, which would increase reproductive and actuarial senescence. This thesis studied the relationships between reproduction, immunity and senescence in the mealworm beetle, Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae) b…

Smelling in the old age

2017

Several authors argued that ageing is accompanied by an impairment of olfactory abilities, i.e., the ability to perceive an odour or a taste. However, beyond this overall effect of age on chemosensory abilities, ageing is accompanied by variability in olfactory performance: the decline of odour perception with age is not uniform across odorants neither across elderly individuals. Decline in odour perception may not be inevitable to the aging individual and that factors secondary to aging, such as poor health status or cognitive decline, may contribute to deficits in odour detectability beyond the age effect per se.

Hydrothermal Ageing Effect on Reinforcement Efficiency of Nanofibrillated Cellulose/Biobased Poly(butylene succinate) Composites

2022

Nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) is a sustainable functional nanomaterial known for its high strength, stiffness, and biocompatibility. It has become a key building block for the next-generation of lightweight, advanced materials for applications such as consumer products, biomedical, energy storage, coatings, construction, and automotive. Tunable and predictable durability under environmental impact is required for high performance applications. Bio-based poly (butylene succinate) (PBS) composites containing up to 50% NFC content were designed and aged in distilled water or at high relative humidity (RH98%). PBS/NFC composites are characterized by up to 10-fold increased water absorption ca…

Investigating the Viability of Multi-Recycling of Asphalt Mixtures through a Preliminary Binder Level Characterization

2022

The incorporation of reclaimed asphalt (RA) in hot mix asphalt mixtures is widely considered a sustainable solution for road infrastructure development. Under the scope of the circular economy (CE), the multiple recycling capability of RA has to be assessed in order to ensure its performance at each recycling cycle and also its viability with different additives. The performance of asphalt mixtures with RA strongly depends on the type of rejuvenator, binder, and their degree of blending in the mix. For this reason, it is essential to know the properties of the aged binder extracted from RA to better understand its rheological properties and optimal dosage of rejuvenation to design a satisfa…

«Come si diventa vecchi»: autopercezione e rappresentazione dell’invecchiamento a Palermo

2008

The Challenges in Moving from Ageing to Successful Longevity

2014

During the last decades survival has significantly improved and centenarians are becoming a fast-growing group of the population. Human life span is mainly dependent on environmental and genetic factors. Favourable modifications of lifestyle factors (e.g. physical activity, diet and not smoking) and healthcare (e.g. effective vascular disease prevention) have also increased human life span. Genetic factors contribute to the variation of human life span by around 25%, which is believed to be more profound after 85 years of age. It is likely that multiple factors influence life span and we need answers to questions such as: 1) What does it take to reach 100?, 2) Do centenarians have better he…

Aging and Anti-Aging Strategies second edition

2015

Ageing of human skin may result from both the passage of time (intrinsic ageing) and from cumulative exposure to external influences (extrinsic ageing) such as ultraviolet radiation (UVR) which promotes wrinkle formation and loss of tissue elasticity. Whilst both ageing processes are associated with phenotypic changes in cutaneous cells, we summarize, in this chapter, related mechanisms involved, discuss on potentential treatment until now disposable, and suggest preventive measures.

Folkhälsans seniorboende och aktivt åldrande : BoAktiv-studien

2019

Análisis de las redes sociales en la vejez a través de la entrevista Manheim Analyses of the social networks for the elderly through the Manheim inte…

2007
