Agency of rural Nepali women as moderated by community learning centres : a postcolonial feminist perspective
2017
This study includes the voices and experiences of fifteen Nepali women who participated in the activities provided at two Community Leaning Centres (CLCs). CLCs provide various learning activities for the women in rural Nepal, where education opportunities for adult women are extremely lacking. Situated within a postcolonial feminist perspective, this thesis aims to investigate not only the benefits of the CLCs for women per se but the construction of women’s agency through the learning using a combination of semi-structured interviews and a thematic data analysis. This study identifies the perceived benefits of women participants and analyses the processes by which women negotiate social c…
Agency in first-semester university students’ career plans
2014
In this paper I examine expressions of agency in autobiographical narratives by Finnish speaking university students of Swedish. Students who write about themselves, their decisions and their career plans are simultaneously involved in (re)constructing their identities. The narratives often include references to “communities of practice” (Lave & Wenger 1991; Wenger 1998) that the students consider as significant, and whose membership they see as something worth dreaming of. These kinds of first-person stories can be regarded as important as far as identity formation is concerned (Sfard & Prusak 2005). The narratives can help in building a bridge between the narrator’s past, the present and …
Narrative Tensions in Strained Junior Elite Performers’ Experiences of Becoming Elite Performers
2021
Contextualized within narrative theory and the field of talent identification and development systems (TIDS), this interview study examined strained junior elite performers’ experiences of becoming elite performers while participating in prestigious national TIDS. The study explored how junior elite performers perceive and negotiate their personal narratives of becoming within a cultural master narrative of being. The focus is on how the quality of person-environment interaction, characterized by narrative alignment or tensions, relates to perceptions of identity, agency, and physical and mental health. We purposefully recruited eight participants (Mage = 17.31, SD = 0.9) from a previously …

Narratives of agency in job burnout recovery

The four studied individuals had participated and benefited from a rehabilitation that took place two years earlier to conducting the present study, yet their recovery processes after rehabilitation differ greatly from each other. The study utilized a triangulation of analysis methods, using content analysis to recognize the used forms of agency and narrative analysis to examine the individual pathways of recovery or non-recovery. Four narratives were co…
Pelaaja on pelaajalle susi : kriittinen analyysi DayZ:n vallitsevasta pelitavasta
2015

Problem Talk in Management Group Meetings
2019
This naturalistic study focuses on problem talk (PT) in hospital management group meetings. The study aims to understand how PT constitutes the hospital organization through the different uses of PT within the meetings, and, therefore, to understand the organizing role of these meetings. The communication as constitutive of organization (CCO) perspective forms the theoretical background of the research. The results of the qualitative analysis show that PT comprises many intertwined tasks that aim to perform the meetings, enhance problem solving, and maintain the relational level of group life. Thus, PT is much more than merely solving problems. In PT, problems are discussed from the viewpo…
Course Satisfaction in Engineering Education Through the Lens of Student Agency Analytics
2020
This Research Full Paper presents an examination of the relationships between course satisfaction and student agency resources in engineering education. Satisfaction experienced in learning is known to benefit the students in many ways. However, the varying significance of the different factors of course satisfaction is not entirely clear. We used a validated questionnaire instrument, exploratory statistics, and supervised machine learning to examine how the different factors of student agency affect course satisfaction among engineering students (N = 293). Teacher’s support and trust for the teacher were identified as both important and critical factors concerning experienced course satisf…
