Reduction of negative alliesthesia for sweet gustatory stimuli by cyproheptadine, a serotonin antagonist

Cyproheptadine (CH) is a serotonin antagonist that increases food intake and body weight. In order to elucidate its mechanism of action on the control of food intake, hunger ratings, pleasure-displeasure to sweet gustatory stimuli and negative alliesthesia induced by a 50 g glucose load were compared in 14 healthy subjects after they had received a placebo or 16 mg of CH. Cyproheptadine did not affect the hunger rating, nor the affective rating in fasted subjects, but it reduced significantly the negative alimentary alliesthesia induced by the glucose load. It is generally considered that changes in serum phosphate levels do not alter parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion in the absence of concomitant changes in ionized serum calcium level in humans. An acute rise in PTH was shown after phosphate administration by intraduodenal gavage in rats. Plasma cyclic AMP was measured in different vessels in seventeen volunteers before and after stimulation with terbutaline. Differences between arterial blood and blood from the hepatic vein, right ventricle, inferior vena cava and a cubital vein could not be demonstrated. Only in the renal vein was the concentration of cyclic AMP decreased. Our results indicate that cyclic AMP is not generated from any specific isolated organ and that changes in cyclic AMP after subcutaneous injection of terbutaline reflect a general influence of this drug.

The objective of the study was to assess the factors related to the occurrence of microalbuminuria during the follow-up of a young adult group with essential hypertension that had not been previously treated. Normo-albuminuric essential hypertensives, <50 years old, who had not been previously treated with antihypertensive drugs and who did not have diabetes mellitus were included. Summary A pulmonary cancer of a 43 year-old-man was classified according to WHO-criteria as a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma because of demonstration of mucinous substances in tumor cells and in rarely occurring acinar lumina. Immunohistochemical reactivity for several peptide hormones was detected in the predominant solid parts of the carcinoma. In many tumor cells an immunoreactivity to neurotensin, bombesin and — according to the elevated serum levels — to ACTH, CRF and calcitonin was found.
