Aims: To identify known vip genes and to detect potentially novel vip genes in a collection of 507 strains of Bacillus thuringiensis. Methods and Results: Following a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) strategy, four restriction patterns were found within the vip1 family: vip1Aa1, vip1Ba1/vip1Ba2 and vip1Ca. In the screening of vip2 genes, patterns similar to those of vip2Aa1, vip2Ba1/vip2Ba2 and vip2Ac1 genes were observed. Patterns for vip3Aa1, vip3Ae2 and vip3Af1 were found among vip3 genes. Females of many species actively engage in multiple mating, with either a single male or several males, but the adaptive function of this behaviour is often unclear. We conducted a laboratory experiment on a small mammal species, the bank vole, testing the possible benefits of multiple mating on a female's short-term reproductive success (pregnancy rate, litter size and early postnatal survival). Such benefits may affect a female's fitness either directly or indirectly (genetic benefit). Genomic conflicts and sexual antagonism in human health: Insights from oxytocin and testosterone

We review the hypothesized and observed effects of two of the major forms of genomic conflicts, genomic imprinting and sexual antagonism, on human health. We focus on phenotypes mediated by peptide and steroid hormones (especially oxytocin and testosterone) because such hormones centrally mediate patterns of physical and behavioral resource allocation that underlie both forms of conflict. In early development, a suite of imprinted genes modulates the human oxytocinergic system as predicted from theory, with paternally inherited gene expression associated with higher oxytocin production, and increased solicitation to mothers by infants. Estrogenic effects of food wrap packaging xenoestrogens and flavonoids in female Wistar rats : a comparative study

International audience; The objective of this study was to compare the estrogenicity of xenoestrogens found in food wrap packaging and phytoestrogen flavonoids. Uterotrophic and vaginal cornification assays were performed on immature and ovariectomized rats. Genistein, bisphenol F, and octylphenol were identified as estrogenic only in immature rats. Using vaginal cornification as a more specific estrogenic parameter, all tested compounds except tangeretin were active in immature rats. While apigenin and kaempferol appeared to have low estrogenic activity, they potentialized the uterotrophic effect of 17β-estradiol in immature rats. Two human serum proteins, corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG) and sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), were purified to homogeneity by the application of a combination of three different modes of chromatography. We showed that twenty weeks of SuperJump activity, an innovative workout training performed on an elastic minitrampoline, reduced bone resorption and increased bone formation in eumenorrheic women acting on the key points of the regulation of bone metabolism. The present study analyzed whether the gastrointestinal hormones are involved in the mechanism of action and if it has an impact on glucose homeostasis.
