Relation of schizophrenia and panic disorder: Evidence from a controlled family study

The intention of this controlled family study was to evaluate reasons for comorbidity of schizophrenia and panic disorder. Observed rates of psychiatric disorders in first-degree relatives of patients and of controls were compared with rates predicted by possible hypotheses explaining comorbidity. The sample consisted of 59 patients with schizophrenia (including seven with schizophreniform disorder), 54 patients with panic disorder (with or without agoraphobia), 29 comorbid patients with lifetime diagnoses of panic disorder and schizophrenia (or schizophreniform disorder, 2 patients) and 109 controls, and their 1068 first-degree relatives. The Panic-Associated Symptom Scale: measuring the severity of panic disorder.

The Panic-Associated Symptom Scale (PASS) is presented as a new measurement of the severity of the core symptoms of panic disorder. This first description addresses the rationale for its design and its scoring, score distributions, test-retest reliability, correlations within the PASS and with other scales, principal component structure, and response to drug therapy. Data are presented from a large study group of patients with panic disorder (n = 1168). Problems in measuring panic disorder are discussed.

Abstract Inverse agonists of the GABA A receptor clearly decrease the amplitudes of the spontaneous EEG in the P-frequency range. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that panic patients exhibit a reduction of the EEGs spectral power in the P-frequency band. The aim of this paper is to provide an interpretation of Anaxagoras’ thought as a form of Philosophy of Nature which, unlike Parmenides’, admits of the coming-to-be and the passing-away which are meant as the continuous mixture and separation of the natural matter. As opposed to a platonistic and metaphisical interpretation, this paper tries to outline an Anaxagorean cosmology, according to which the physis is accounted of as unity that stems from multiplicity, that is from the summixis of manifold different ingredients which keep on being in continuous motion. ABSTRACTThis contribution focuses on how one hegemonic idea – excellence – which has significant impact on science and higher education policy was translated in two Nordic countries: Norway and Sweden. Building on key concepts emanating from political science and organizational sociology, the article assesses how excellence was locally translated by policy makers, leading to the rise of a series of policy measures aimed at fostering excellence in science across the board. In doing this, we investigate a key empirical dimension: the policy mechanisms or instruments launched at national levels (two Nordic countries) in the form of centers of excellence.

Objective There is a very limited amount of research on the relationship between therapist and patient in-session behavior and treatment outcome in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for panic disorder with agoraphobia (PD/AG). Additionally, the findings tend to be inconclusive. This study investigates the association between therapist competence, adherence, patient interpersonal behavior, and therapeutic alliance and outcome in a low-control CBT setting by using comprehensive measures.
