Corporate responsibility (CR) is becoming a key issue in the food chain. In order to make sense of this phenomenon, a seminal aper by Maloni and Brown (2006) called for further empirical investigation on the criteria of responsibility in the food supply chain. The purpose of this paper is to answer the call by identifying the criteria for defining CR and develop indicators for measuring the responsibility performance of the food chain. New research indicates that firms combining the science-based STI (Science, Technology, Innovation) and the experience-based DUI (Doing, Using, Interacting) modes of innovation are more efficient when it comes to improving innovation capacity and competitiveness. With regard to innovation policy, the STI mode calls for a supply driven policy, typically aimed to commercialise research results. The aim of this article is to analyze the changes in the structure of growth of animals for slaughter production in the Polish regions in the years 2004–2014, according to the sector of animals for slaughter using the classical shift share method. The study evaluates the rate of growth of volumes of animals for slaughter production. Furthermore, it identifies and estimates the share of structural and regional changes in the size of the effect of the global (total animals for slaughter production in Poland) in the regional breakdown.

Quality is a key factor when consumers choose agri-food products, but at the same time is difficult for them to assess. The objective of this text is to provide noneconomists with an analytical tool with which to understand some of the more important trends in the food system and to improve the interpretation of the complex and rapid changes to which this field is subject. The text will begin with a general description of the main characteristics of traditional agricultural markets and then examine modern agricultural markets and related issues, such as industrialization and globalization. Finally, the text will address some of the implications of recent events in global agricultural markets regarding food security and the goal of zero hunger.
