Contamination of soil by copper affects the dynamics, diversity, and activity of soil bacterial communities involved in wheat decomposition and carbo…
2009
ABSTRACT A soil microcosm experiment was conducted to evaluate the influence of copper contamination on the dynamics and diversity of bacterial communities actively involved in wheat residue decomposition. In the presence of copper, a higher level of CO 2 release was observed, which did not arise from greater wheat decomposition but from a higher level of stimulation of soil organic matter mineralization (known as the priming effect). Such functional modifications may be related to significant modifications in the diversity of active bacterial populations characterized using the DNA stable-isotope probing approach.
Dependence of accelerated degradation of atrazine on soil pH in French and Canadian soils
2000
Abstract A series of agricultural soils varying in their atrazine treatment history were sampled from 12 sites in France and two sites in Canada. The soils varied widely with respect to soil chemical, physical and microbiological (total microbial biomass, kinetics of C and N mineralization) properties. Soils treated with as few as two successive atrazine field applications mineralized [U- ring - 14 C]atrazine significantly more rapidly in 35 d laboratory incubations than did soils which had never received atrazine. Longer treatment history tended to favour more rapid mineralization in the so-called “adapted” soils. Up to 80% of the initially applied 14 C-atrazine was mineralized at the end …
Review of the impact of biogas digestates on the microbiological quality of agricultural soils
2023
The global production of biogas has increased threefold during the last decade to partly replace fossil fuels, yet biogas production by anaerobic digestion generates substantial amounts of by-products named digestates. These biogas digestates can be recycled in soils to fertilize crops and to sequester carbon. However, the impact of digestates on the soil biological is actually poorly known. Here we reviewed the impact of digestates published in 56 articles reporting 23 microbial parameters. Half of the articles show neutral effects of biogas digestates and 7% showed negative effects. 25% of the articles show more stimulation of biogas digestates for the soil microbial quality, compared to …
Suitability of Borago officinalis for Minimal Processing as Fresh-Cut Produce
2019
Borage (Borago officinalis L.) is a wild vegetable appreciated as a folk medicine and for culinary preparations. The introduction of borage as a specialized cultivation would allow for the diversification of vegetable crops and would widen the offerings of raw and minimally processed leafy vegetables. Thus, the aim of the research was to evaluate the quality and shelf-life of fresh-cut borage stored at different temperatures. Borage plants were grown during the autumn&ndash
Lifelong exposure to low dose xeno-hormones in rats : multi-generational effects of xeno-hormone mixtures on taste preferences, maternal behavior, an…
2012
During the last decade, the issue of health-related endocrine disruptors (ED) has been extended to the toxicity of mixtures. The objective of this study was to define the effects of lifelong exposure to ED mixtures, at low doses defined as "non-harmful" by the authorities. In this aim, the effects of mixtures combining genistein, vinclozolin and bisphenol A, have been investigated in the rat by using an integrative and multi-generational experimental approach which takes into account maternal behavior, feeding behavior and development. Our results show that these mixtures could: a) reduce maternal behavior, b) change taste preferences (sweet, salty), c) affect the development from the in ut…
Impact of Plasmopara viticola on starch metabolism and stomachal functions in grapevine leaves
2011
The grapevine downy mildew affects leaves and young berries and can affect the harvest quality and quantity. The causal agent is the obligate biotroph oomycete Plasmopara viticola that induces severe physiological alterations in infected leaves. One is the abnormal accumulation of starch in oil spots, the characteristic symptoms of the disease. Another is a deregulation of stomatal movements. Stomata, natural openings on the leaf surface allowing gas exchanges between the plant and the atmosphere, stay abnormally open during the night and do no longer close upon water stress or ABA treatment in infected leaves. This thesis is divided into two chapters that aim to i) explain the origin and m…
Estimating the difference between brightness and surface temperatures for a vegetal canopy
1995
Abstract The difference between the surface temperature T S and the brightness temperature T b , which can be measured with a thermal infrared radiometer, has been calculated for different surface emissivity values and different atmospheric conditions. These calculations show that T s − T b is often significant even for high surface emissivities and that the spectral band in which the measurements are performed is a key factor in the interpretation of T s − T b . In particular, it is not a simple matter to use the characterisation of the whole spectrum atmospheric radiation to derive T s from T b when the measurements are performed in the 8–14 μm atmospheric window.
