Short-term low-severity spring grassland fire impacts on soil extractable elements and soil ratios in Lithuania

2017

Abstract Spring grassland fires are common in boreal areas as a consequence of slash and burn agriculture used to remove dry grass to increase soil nutrient properties and crop production. However, few works have investigated fire impacts on these grassland ecosystems, especially in the immediate period after the fire. The objective of this work was to study the short-term impacts of a spring grassland fire in Lithuania. Four days after the fire we established a 400 m2 sampling grid within the burned area and in an adjacent unburned area with the same topographical, hydrological and pedological characteristics. We collected topsoil samples immediately after the fire (0 months), 2, 5, 7 and …

Biomolecular characterization of wild sicilian oregano: phytochemical screening of essential oils and extracts, and evaluation of their antioxidant a…

2013

An extensive survey of wild Sicilian oregano was made. A total of 57 samples were collected from various sites, followed by taxonomic characterization from an agronomic perspective. Based on morphological and production characteristics obtained from the 57 samples, cluster analysis was used to divide the samples into homogeneous groups, to identify the best biotypes. All samples were analyzed for their phytochemical content, applying a cascade-extraction protocol and hydrodistillation, to obtain the non volatile components and the essential oils, respectively. The extracts contained thirteen polyphenol derivatives, i.e., four flavanones, seven flavones, and two organic acids. Their qualitat…

BIOTECHNOLOGICAL APPROACHES TO THE GENETIC IMPROVEMENT OF CHRYSANTHEMUM CINERARIAEFOLIUM L.

2011

The interest in sustainable agriculture has increased the demand of plant-derived compounds which can be less toxic both to mammals and to the environment than the synthetic agrochemicals. Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium L. (Asteraceae), commonly termed pyrethrum, is an economically important crop from highlands of tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It is grown for the extraction of pyrethrins, natural insect repellents of plant origin. Pyrethrins are a mixture of six compounds produced by esterification of two acids (chrysanthemic and pyrethric acid) with three mono-terpene-alcohols (pyrethrolone-5, jasmolone-3 and cinerolone-4). The principale source of pyrethrins are the dried…

Diagnostico del estado actual de consevación de Puya raimondii en Arequipa – Perù.

2010

The diagnosis of the current state of conservation of Puya raimondii Hams in Arequipa, Perú. – The authors show the results of a survey carried out in Perù, Arequipe region, and Bolivia, on the geographical distribution of Puya raimondii Harms. After describing the systematic and nomenclature of the Andinian species, the study of the biological, ecological and conservation status of this endemic plant species has been performed, as well. They have also described the density population and the risk of genetic erosion caused of both natural and anthropic pressure. Finally they evaluated the use of this plant species as animal feeding, popular medicine traditional local use.

A methodology for the sustainability assessment of agri-food systems: an application to the Slow Food Presidia project

2014

New and alternative models for agri-food production and consumption have brought up questions regarding the effects they have on local development processes in terms of the economic exploitation of rural areas as well as environmental, cultural, and social factors. The agri-food system proposed by the Slow Food (SF) Presidia Project, which focuses on farm-to-market systems for local, high-quality, sustainable products, can respond to the new and emerging needs of both rural and urban populaces via several approaches in addition to food production itself. However, evaluating these parameters is challenging. The aim of this study was to develop an indicator-based tool to monitor the sustainab…

Effects of Plant Density on the Number of Glandular Trichomes and on Yield and Quality of Essential Oils from Oregano.

2016

Plants yields are influenced by agronomic techniques. Plant density is a complex issue and extremely important when maximizing both crop quality, and biomass and essential oil yields. Plants belonging to the Origanum vulgare subspecies hirtum (Link) Ietswaart were grown adopting four types of plant density and were characterized in biometric and chemical terms. The samples were analyzed using the ANOVA (Principal Component Analysis) statistical method regarding biometric aspects, EO yield and peltate hair density. Essential oil (EO) was extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed using GC-FID and GC-MS. GC-FID and GC-MS analysis led to the identification of 45 compounds from the EO. Plant …

EFECTO DEL PRETRATAMIENTO CON MICROONDAS EN LA HIDRÓLISIS ENZIMÁTICA DE LOS RESIDUOS CÍTRICOS PARA LA OBTENCIÓN DE BIOETANOL

2013

Influence of arbuscular mycorrhizae on biomass production and nitrogen fixation of berseem clover plants subjected to water stress.

2014

Several studies, performed mainly in pots, have shown that arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis can mitigate the negative effects of water stress on plant growth. No information is available about the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis on berseem clover growth and nitrogen (N) fixation under conditions of water shortage. A field experiment was conducted in a hilly area of inner Sicily, Italy, to determine whether symbiosis with AM fungi can mitigate the detrimental effects of drought stress (which in the Mediterranean often occurs during the late period of the growing season) on forage yield and symbiotic N2 fixation of berseem clover. Soil was either left under water stress (i.e., rai…
