Study and characterization of the "Viable but non-culturable" state in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
2013
The viable but not culturable (VBNC) state has been studied in detail in bacteria. Bycontrast the VBNC state in other microorganisms, including particularly eukaryotes, has receivedmuch less attention. However, it has been suggested that in wine, Brettanomyces yeast cells mayenter a Viable But Not Culturable State, in particular in the presence of high, sulfur dioxide(SO2) concentration. To provide conclusive evidences for the existence of a VBNC state in yeast, especially in S.cerevisiae as a model organism, the capacity of different S cerevisiae strains to become viableand not cultivable after a sulfite stress with various concentrations of SO2 was studied by flowcytometry (FCM) using fluo…

Are oral health conditions associated with schoolchildren’s performance and school attendance in the Kingdom of Bahrain? A life‐course perspective
2021
Background: The link between oral diseases and school performance and school attendance remains unclear among Middle Eastern children.Aim: To investigate the relationship of oral conditions with schoolchildren's school performance and attendance using the life- course approach.Design: A cross- sectional study was conducted with 466 schoolchildren aged 7- 8 years from Kingdom of Bahrain (KoB) and their parents. Questionnaire data on children's current and at- birth environmental characteristics were completed by their parents. Monitoring a meat-free pledge with smartphones:An experimental study
2020
Pledges are a popular strategy to encourage meat reduction, though experimental studies of their efficacy are lacking. Three-hundred and twenty-five participants from three different countries (UK, Germany, Australia) were randomly assigned to pledge 28 days meat-free or not, and their behavior was tracked via smartphones. Participants answered daily surveys regarding their eating behavior, meat cravings, and shared photos of their meals. Baseline data was collected prior to the pledge, after the 28 days, and one-month post-intervention. Participants assigned to the pledge condition ate less meat across the 28 days, compared to control participants. Meat reductions, observed at outtake, did…
Femoral neck’s fracture in Fahr’s Syndrome: case report
2016
Fahr's syndrome, also known as "Bilateral Striopallidodentate Calcinosis" (BSPDC) primitive, is a rare neurological disease characterized by the presence of idiopathic, bilateral, symmetrical and abnormal deposition of calcium in areas of the brain that control movements including the basal ganglia, dentate nuclei of the cerebellum, nuclei of thalamus and semi-oval center. We describe a case of a 76-year-old male patient underwent reduction and fixation of a subtrochanteric fracture with intramedullary nail. During post-operative rehabilitation therapists's patient management was difficult due to obvious extrapyramidal symptoms characterized by dysarthria, rigidity, bradykinesia, postural i…
Comparative characteristics of older people with type 1 diabetes treated with continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion or insulin injection therapy :…
2019
Aim To compare clinical characteristics and outcomes in adults with type 1 diabetes aged ≥ 60 years using continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) vs. insulin injection therapy. Further, to determine the percentage of older adults with type 1 diabetes using CSII. Research design and methods Retrospective study using data of the Diabetes Prospective Follow-up Registry (DPV). Including percentage CSII use from 2008 to 2018, and the characteristics of 9547 individuals extracted from the DPV in March 2019 (N = 1404 CSII; N = 8143 insulin injection therapy). Wilcoxon rank sum tests were used for continuous variables and chi-square tests for categorical variables to compare clinical charac…
