Reliability of transcranial magnetic stimulation and H-reflex measurement during balance perturbation tasks
2022
Following ankle movement, posterior balance perturbation evokes short- (SLR ∼30–50 ms), medium- (MLR ∼50–60 ms), and long-latency responses (LLR ∼70–90 ms) in soleus muscle before voluntary muscle contraction. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and Hoffmann-reflex (H-reflex) measurements can provide insight into the contributions of corticospinal and spinal mechanisms to each response. Motor evoked potential (MEP) and H-reflex responses have shown good reliability in some dynamic muscle contraction tasks. However, it is still unclear how reliable these methods are in dynamic balance perturbation and corticospinal modulation during long amplitude balance perturbation tasks. 14 subjects …
Fundamental movement skills and weight status in children: A systematic review
2017
Background Obesity has become a major health challenge in children. Fundamental movement skills (FMS) are suggested to have an important role for being physically active and decreasing the risk of obesity. This systematic review aimed to give an overview of studies providing evidence for a relationship between FMS and the weight status in children. Material/Methods A systematic search of five electronic databases (MEDLINE (PubMed), SportDiscus, ERIC, PsycInfo and SCOPUS) was conducted in January 2015. Studies examining associations between FMS and weight status in children aged 3–12 years were included. Results The final sample included 12 cross-sectional studies. Seven studies found statis…
Association of body composition, physical activity and fracture history on postural sway in girls
2012
Hyvä tasapainon hallinta on tärkeää normaalien päivittäisten askareiden suorittamiseksi.
Does the increase in body weight change the knee and ankle joint loading in walking and running?
2015
Previous obese studies showed that there is a correlation of weight to joint load in the knee joint during walking. In load-carrying studies, there are several studies but no consistent findings in the knee joint loads in walking and running. Our aim was to investigate how the joint load changes in body weight gaining, using added vest that was 10% of the body weight to mimic the conditions. We used Vicon eight-camera system and five force platforms with inverse dynamics to calculate the peak ground reaction forces(GRFs), joint angle, joint moments, and patellofemoral contact forces(PFCF), patellafemoral stress(PFS), peak patellofemoral tendon force(PTF) and peak Achilles tendon force (ATF)…
Sopivaa musiikkia vai suosikkimusiikkia? : musiikin ja mainoksen yhteensopiviksi kokemisen sekä musiikista pitämisen rooli televisiomainoksen musiiki…
2013
Kuluttajan suhtautuminen mainosmusiikkiin rakentuu monimutkaisessa prosessissa, jossa on mukana useita muuttujia. Tutkimus käsittelee erityisesti kahta suhtautumisen osatekijää, musiikin ja mainoksen yhteensopiviksi kokemista ja musiikista pitämistä, sekä niiden roolia suhtautumisen muotoutumisprosessissa. Tutkimusmetodina on puolistrukturoitu teemahaastattelu. Haastattelun osana haastateltavat näkivät neljä erityylistä musiikkia sisältävää mainosta, joiden onnistumista (tai epäonnistumista) he arvioivat. Tulokset viittaavat siihen, että kokemus yhteensopivuudesta vaikuttaisi pitämistä enemmän mainosmusiikkiin suhtautumiseen. Positiivisimmin kuluttaja näyttäisi suhtautuvan mainoksiin, joihi…
The maintenance of sexually antagonistic variation in reproductive success by negative frequency-dependence in the bank vole (Myodes glareolus)
2011
Natural selection theory predicts low variance in traits closely related to reproductive success, since the most fit trait value should replace all the others. However, a considerable amount of variation is found in life-history traits throughout the animal kingdom. The most widely accepted mechanism maintaining this variation is a balance between mutation and selection; however, observed variance is higher than predicted by mutation – selection balance alone and thus additional processes must be involved. One possible mechanism which has only recently started to gain attention is intralocus sexual conflict, where the optima of fitness related traits are sex dependent. This leads to sexuall…

A cross-cultural examination of fat women’s experiences: Stigma and gender in North American and Finnish culture
2019
In this manuscript, the voices of women of size in North America and Finland indicate that there is a shared experience of being fat. Based on cross-cultural analysis of our respective empirical findings, we argue that there is a shared Western fat lived experience that perpetuates a stigmatized gendered landscape of living with a fat body. The emergent themes tended to revolve around two similar contradictions—the phenomenon of hyper(in)visibility and a belief their fatness is a temporary or liminal state—both of which lead to an internalization of fat hatred. We argue that these findings stem from the tremendous stigma and mistreatment that both samples of women face in their daily lives.…

Postural balance and susceptibility to falls in older women : genetic and environmental influences in single and dual task situations
2006
This study was conducted to assess the contribution of genetic and non-genetic influences to postural balance while standing and walking under single and dual task conditions. Furthermore, the role of familial and non-familial influences in susceptibility to falls was examined. In addition, the validity of force platform balance tests as predictors of falls was elucidated. The present study was part of the Finnish Twin Study on Aging (FITSA). A population based sample of this study consisted of 206 monozygotic and 228 dizygotic female twins aged 63-76 years. Postural balance was assessed with force platform stance tests and walking tests. The balance tests were carried out as single tasks an…
