The Influence of Absorption on the Extinction of Solar and Sky Radiation

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of absorption of the aerosol particles on the extinction of solar and sky radiation. The efficiency factors have been computed as well as the extinction, the scattering, the absorption, and the scattering function for the whole turbid atmosphere with help of the Mie theory for a complex index of refraction for a more or less absorbent medium. From these values the intensities of diffuse sky radiation have been obtained. This work aims to identify the geochemical and mineralogical markers of Icelandic dust and to differentiate it from the dust of local origin deposited at the Ny-Ålesund station. We characterized representative sediment samples from Iceland and Svalbard and compared them to a set of aerosol samples collected in Ny-Ålesund to check the existence and type of the mineralogical markers. The sediment samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) to detect the mineralogical constrain of the geochemical markers. Abstract The subject of the article is aspects of PV modules and cells measurement, with the use of natural sunlight. A light source is an important element during calibration and measurements of solar cells and modules. All designers of artificial light sources try to recreate natural light using so called measurement tables. Meridional gradients of light absorbing carbon over northern Europe

In situ measurements have been made in the upper troposphere of the properties of particles containing light absorbing carbon (LAC). These measurements, made in late November 2006 over northern Europe, show that the average LAC mass concentration varies between 1 and 5 ng m−3 over a latitude range 50° to 70°N, with maxima at 50° and 66°. The relative fraction of all particles larger than 0.1 µm that contain LAC decreases at higher latitudes. The derived extinction coefficient, which also increases with latitude, reaches a maximum of 1.4 Mm−1 at 66°. At the University of Agder in Grimstad, Southern Norway, a test bench for photovoltaic modules is in operation since December 2010. Currently, various c-Si as well as aSi, CIS and HIT modules are under investigation. This project is part of the Norwegian contribution to IEA PVPS Task13. The paper focuses on the stability of the modules' MPP-performance in the course of one year. For this purpose, data on the DC response are logged together with irradiance and module temperature at one-minute intervals. Data analysis is performed in monthly blocks. Extreme overirradiance events in Norway: 1.6 suns measured close to 60°N

Abstract We report the most extreme overirradiance event of 1.6 kW/m 2 measured so far in Grimstad, southern Norway (latitude 58°20′), at altitude of only about 60 m a.s.l. Images of the sky conditions taken with a wide-dynamic-range camera suggest that this is not the ultimate value for our location, but that extremes as high as 1.7 kW/m 2 may be possible. The phenomenon was caused by strong forward scattering of sunlight within 3° around the solar disk in thin, broken altocumulus clouds. The normalized spectrum of sunlight during such extreme events is very similar to the normalized clear-sky spectrum measured at Air Mass 1.4 and irradiance of 1.0 kW/m 2 . Spring to summer changes in the West African monsoon through NCEP/NCAR reanalyses (1968–1998)

[1] This article focuses on the spring to summer evolutions of the West African monsoon from an energetic point of view; it uses NCEP/NCAR reanalyses along with observed and simulated rainfall data over the period 1968–1998. The results show that the West African monsoon can be viewed as a coupled ocean-atmosphere-land system phased with the zenithal evolution of solar radiation which maintains its thermally direct circulation by pumping, from the surface, enthalpy mainly in spring and latent energy in summer. The source and pathway of the hydration patch in the TTL (tropical tropopause layer) that was measured during the Stratospheric and upper tropospheric processes for better climate predictions (StratoClim) field campaign during the Asian summer monsoon in 2017 and its connection to convective overshoots are investigated. Vertical distributions of atmospheric dimethyl sulfide (DMS(g)) were sampled aboard the research aircraft Polar 6 near Lancaster Sound, Nunavut, Canada, in July 2014 and on pan-Arctic flights in April 2015 that started from Longyearbyen, Spitzbergen, and passed through Alert and Eureka, Nunavut, and Inuvik, Northwest Territories. Larger mean DMS(g) mixing ratios were present during April 2015 (campaign mean of 116 ± 8 pptv) compared to July 2014 (campaign mean of 20 ± 6 pptv). Iodine speciation in marine aerosols along a 30,000 km round-trip cruise path from Shanghai, China to Prydz Bay, Antarctica

[1] Total suspended particle (TSP) samples were collected onboard a round-trip cruise from Shanghai, China to Prydz Bay, Antarctica from November 2005 to March 2006. Water soluble iodine species were measured using ion chromatography coupled to Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (IC-ICP-MS). The results reveal that soluble organic iodine (SOI) is the most abundant fraction, accounting for approximately 70 % of total soluble iodine (TSI) on average. One unidentified organic iodine (UOI) signal was present in almost all of the samples and was responsible for up to 38.3% of TSI.
