Fatigue cracks are a major defect in metal alloys, and specifically, their study poses defect evaluation challenges in aluminum aircraft alloys. Existing inline inspection tools exhibit measurement uncertainties. The physical-based methods for crack growth prediction utilize stress analysis models and the crack growth model governed by Paris’ law. These models, when utilized for long-term crack growth prediction, yield sub-optimum solutions and pose several technical limitations to the prediction problems. Expression and purification of polyhistidine-tagged firefly luciferase in insect cells

The coleopteran firefly, Photinus pyralis, luciferase was produced in lepidopteran Trichoplusia ni insect cells using a baculovirus expression vector. The recombinant protein was equipped with a polyhistidine affinity tag at the carboxyl terminus and purified by immobilized metal-ion affinity chromatography in combination with an expanded bed adsorption system. This approach enabled an efficient, one-step purification protocol of a genetically modified luciferase with properties similar to those of the authentic counterpart. ‘Each flight is different’ : Carbon emissions of selected flights in three geographical markets

Air travel is considered the biggest individual climate sin. Avoiding flying, however, seems impossible. In this paper we argue that the flight a passenger chooses can be significant. For this purpose we compared the carbon emissions of selected flights in three geographical markets. We found tremendous differences in the environmental performance of individual flights. Furthermore, we also found that flying with the most modern aircraft or flying non-stop represents, in many cases, the least polluting option. Nevertheless, we were able to show that there are exceptions to this rule. Based on our results, we provide recommendations to the industry and for further research. peerReviewed

Long-range, high-altitude Unoccupied Aerial System (UAS) operations now enable in-situ measurements of volcanic gas chemistry at globally-significant active volcanoes.
