Antioxidant Effect of a Probiotic Product on a Model of Oxidative Stress Induced by High-Intensity and Duration Physical Exercise
2021
This randomized double-blind and controlled single-center clinical trial was designed to evaluate the effect of a 6-week intake of a probiotic product (1 capsule/day) vs. a placebo on an oxidative stress model of physical exercise (high intensity and duration) in male cyclists (probiotic group, n = 22
Corrigendum: Seabuckthorn Pulp Oil Protects against Myocardial Ischemia–Reperfusion Injury in Rats through Activation of Akt/eNOS
2016
Seabuckthorn (SBT) pulp oil obtained from the fruits of seabuckthorn [Hippophae rhamnoides L. (Elaeagnaceae)] has been used traditionally for its medicinal and nutritional properties. However, its role in ischemia–reperfusion (IR) injury of myocardium in rats has not been elucidated so far. The present study reports the cardioprotective effect of SBT pulp oil in IR-induced model of myocardial infarction in rats and underlying mechanism mediating activation of Akt/eNOS signaling pathway. Male albino Wistar rats were orally administered SBT pulp oil (5, 10, and 20 ml/kg/day) or saline for 30 days. On the day 31, ischemia was induced by one-stage ligation of left anterior descending coronary a…

Nature is an indispensable source of new drugs, providing unique bioactive lead structures for drug discovery. In the present study, secalonic acid F (SAF), a naturally occurring ergochrome pigment, was studied for its cytotoxicity against various leukemia and multiple myeloma cells by the resazurin assay. SAF exhibited cytotoxic activity on both leukemia and multiple myeloma cells. Generally, multiple myeloma cells were more sensitive to SAF than leukemia cells. NCI-H929 cells were the most affected cells among the tested panel of multiple myeloma cell lines and were taken for further studies to assess the mode of action of SAF on those cells. Cell cycle analysis revealed that SAF induced …
La fortificación del Reino de Valencia en la década de1640 a la luz de la revolución militar
2019
This article proposes a study of the traditions in defensive architecture that concurred in the projects designed by Spanish military engineers for the fortification of the Valencian frontier in 1648 and 1649, in the context of the War of Catalonia (1640-1652). For this it is essential to follow the route of the Valencian adaptations to the military revolution in the matter of fortifications throughout the sixteenth century and compare them with those brought to Valencia in 1641 by the Marquis of Leganes and his engineers from the school of Milan.
Ajatuksella ja ahkeruudella kolmen suvun vaiheista neljältä vuosisadalta
2018
Kirja-arvio teoksesta Immonen, Perttu: Suomen rahvaan historia. Kolmen suvun elämää keskiajalta 1800-luvulle. Atena Kustannus Oy, 2017. 639 sivua. ISBN 978- 952-300-335-4. Perttu Immonen yhdistää teoksessaan mielenkiintoisesti ja elävästi mikro- ja makrohistorian varhaismodernin ajan Suomessa. Hän seuraa kronologisesti kolmen eri seutukunnan: LänsiSuomen Sastamalan, Itä-Suomen Rantasalmen ja Pohjanmaan Kokkolan tapahtumia. Poikkeuksellisen ankarien aikojen kuvauksesta muodostuu moniulotteinen ja alueiden erilaisia kohtaloita tarkasteleva analyysi. nonPeerReviewed
The geometers of the cadastre of Catalonia (1720-1815)
2009
After the Austrian defeat in the War of the Spanish Succession a cadastre was imposed to Catalonia. That entailed the…
Non-invasive Geophysical Surveys in Search of the Roman Temple of Augustus Under the Cathedral of Tarragona (Catalonia, Spain): A Case Study
2018
An integrated geophysical survey has been conducted at the Tarragona’s Cathedral (Catalonia, NE Spain) with the aim to confirm the potential occurrence of archaeological remains of the Roman Temple dedicated to the Emperor Augustus. Many hypotheses have been proposed about its possible location, the last ones regarding the inner part of the Cathedral, which is one of the most renowned temples of Spain (twelfth century) evolving from Romanesque to Gothic styles. A geophysical project including electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and ground probing radar (GPR) was planned over 1 year considering the administrative and logistic difficulties of such a project inside a cathedral of religious…
Understanding the Significance of the Hypothalamic Nature of the Subthalamic Nucleus
2021
AbstractThe subthalamic nucleus (STN) is an essential component of the basal ganglia and has long been considered to be a part of the ventral thalamus. However, recent neurodevelopmental data indicated that this nucleus is of hypothalamic origin which is now commonly acknowledged. In this work, we aimed to verify whether the inclusion of the STN in the hypothalamus could influence the way we understand and conduct research on the organization of the whole ventral and posterior diencephalon. Developmental and neurochemical data indicate that the STN is part of a larger glutamatergic posterior hypothalamic region that includes the premammillary and mammillary nuclei. The main anatomic charact…

Early ROS-mediated DNA damage and oxidative stress biomarkers in Monoclonal B Lymphocytosis
2012
Monoclonal B Lymphocytosis (MBL) is defined as asymptomatic monoclonal B-cell expansion characterised by a CLL-phenotype, but with less than 5 x 10(9)/I circulating cells. Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated cell damage plays a critical role in the initiation of carcinogenesis as well as in malignant transformation. The goal of this study was to perform an analysis of the oxidative stress statuses of patients affected by MBL and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). We examined peripheral blood and urine specimens from 29 patients with MBL, 55 with CLL and 31 healthy subjects. There was a significant increase in the occurrence of the mutagenic base 8-oxo-2'-deoxiguanosine (8-oxo-dG) in th…
