ChemInform Abstract: A Simple Procedure for the Oxidation of Alcohols Using [Bis(acetoxy)iodo]benzene and a Catalytic Amount of Bromide Ions in Ethyl…

2015

Primary and secondary benzylic alcohols and secondary aliphatic alcohols were oxidized to the corresponding aldehydes and ketones by using [bis(acetoxy)iodo]benzene (BAIB) and a catalytic amount of bromide ions, from tetrabutylammonium bromide or KBr, in ethyl acetate. The catalytic role of the bromide ions was also highlighted in the oxidation of primary aliphatic alcohols and secondary allylic alcohols carried out in the presence of 1 mol% TEMPO.

Linear Organic Carbonates

2003

The most common and successful method for producing organic carbonates, including polycarbonates, has been based for long time on the reaction between an alcohol or phenol and phosgene. The existing strict environmental regulations and the expanding market for organic carbonates do not assure that this technology can continue to have a leading role in this area, due to the inherent riskfulness of the processes. The market expansion of dimethyl carbonate (DMC), diphenyl carbonate (DPC), and bisphenol A polycarbonate (BPA-PC) is a reality, finding its driving force from the industrialization of alternative routes by EniChem (Italy) and UBE (Japan). This favorable situation can be foreseen for…

Synthesis of Symmetrical 1,4-Diarylphthalazines

1975

Abstract It is well known that 1, 4-diarylphthalazines are prepared by condensation of the appropriate ortho-diaroylbenzenes with hydrazine hydrate.1 As ortho-diaroylbenzenes can be obtained by oxidation of ortho-dibenzylbenzenes, a rapid method is proposed to obtain the ortho-dibenzylbenzenes (Ia) and (Ib) by reaction of the highly reactive2 veratrol with para-chloro- or ortho-chlorobenzyl alcohol in sulfuric acid. The products obtained gave by oxidation the ortho-diaroylbenzenes (IIa) and (IIb), which were transformed into the 1,4-diarylphthalazines (IVa) and (IVb) by treatment with hydrazine hydrate.

Two phenolic alcohols with six phenolic units in their molecules have been obtained by stepwise syntheses starting from simple phenolic derivatives. The phenolic alcohols were cyclized in a one step cyclization by boiling in a very diluted acetic acid solution. A two step cyclization of a phenolic alcohol with three phenolic units to a cyclohexamer proceeds only with poor yields. The cyclic compounds were compared with chainlike oligomers containing six phenolic units in their molecules.

In order to investigate the influences of different end-groups on oligomer miscibility with other substances, oligo(propylene glycol)s bearing OH groups (OPG-OH) studied in the previous paper2, were acetylated at both ends (OPG-AC). The limits of miscibility of OPG-AC with oligo(dimethylsiloxane) (ODMS) were measured turbidimetrically. A simple and reliable method for the determination of the critical points from turbidity data is presented. The observed upper critical temperatures (Tc) increase with degree of oligomerization of ODMS (ranging from 1 to 5), whereas Tc shows a minimum when the degree of oligomerization of the OPG-AC is raised (from 1 to 57,5). For lower mol. wt. oligoglycols,…

Micellar fluorescence enhancement of carbamate pesticides

1990

Abstract Different studies have been carried out on the interaction of carbamate pesticides, such as carbofuran and carbaryl, with nonionic and anionic surfactants. Micellar fluorescence enhancements (MEF) of 15–20 for carbofuran in the presence of fatty alcohol ethylene oxide condensates, and of 3.7–8.6 in the presence of anionic surfactants at neutral pH have been obtained. Carbaryl does not interact with surfactants, but when it is hydrolysed to 1-naphthol, MEF values of the order of 2 are obtained in the presence of nonylphenol ethylene oxide condensates. The experimental parameters have been optimized in order to obtain maximum fluorescence. The mechanisms involved in the fluorescence …
