Regulatory O 2 tensions for the synthesis of fermentation products in Escherichia coli and relation to aerobic respiration
1997
In an oxystat, the synthesis of the fermentation products formate, acetate, ethanol, lactate, and succinate of Escherichia coli was studied as a function of the O2 tension (pO2) in the medium. The pO2 values that gave rise to half-maximal synthesis of the products (pO0. 5) were 0.2-0.4 mbar for ethanol, acetate, and succinate, and 1 mbar for formate. The pO0.5 for the expression of the adhE gene encoding alcohol dehydrogenase was approximately 0.8 mbar. Thus, the pO2 for the onset of fermentation was distinctly lower than that for anaerobic respiration (pO0.5/= 5 mbar), which was determined earlier. An essential role for quinol oxidase bd in microaerobic growth was demonstrated.
Respiratory behaviour of a Zymomonas mobilis adhB::kan(r) mutant supports the hypothesis of two alcohol dehydrogenase isoenzymes catalysing opposite …
2006
AbstractPerturbation of the aerobic steady-state in a chemostat culture of the ethanol-producing bacterium Zymomonas mobilis with a small pulse of ethanol causes a burst of ethanol oxidation, although the reactant ratio of the alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) reaction ([NADH][acetaldehyde][H+])/([ethanol][NAD+]) remains above the Keq value. Simultaneous catalysis of ethanol synthesis and oxidation by the two ADH isoenzymes, residing in different redox microenvironments, has been proposed previously. In the present study, this hypothesis is verified by construction of an ADH-deficient strain and by demonstration that it lacks the oxidative burst in response to perturbation of its aerobic steady-s…
Child behaviour and adult personality: comparisons between criminality groups in Finland and Sweden
2000
Background; Lately there has been an increasing interest in whether personality traits are associated with criminal behaviour in male and female subjects. Criminality and alcohol abuse are often associated. Delinquent adolescents are impulsive and danger seeking. Childhood aggression may be a precursor of adult criminality. Method Using longitudinal data, adult personality and childhood behaviours were examined for groups of non-criminals and criminals of Finnish (n = 268) and Swedish (n + 169) samples, and crime groups were compared in the two cultures. Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP) were given at adult age and the participants had been observed and rated by their teachers in respe…
Influence of culture conditions on production of flavour compounds by 29 ligninolytic Basidiomycetes
1990
The odorous volatile metabolites produced by 29 ligninolytic Basidiomycete strains (identified by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectroscopy — GC-MS) and the flavour quality of their cultures were investigated on 6 different liquid media tested with and without agitation. 113 compounds were identified, the most numerous being alcohols (2-methyl 1-propanol, 2-methyl 1-butanol, 3 methyl 1-butanol, 2 phenyl ethanol, 3,4, dimethoxy phenyl methanol, 4 vinyl phenol), aldehydes (3, 4 dimethoxybenzaldehyde) and ketones (4-hydroxy 3-methyl 2-phenyl 2-cyclopentene 1-one). One third of these compounds possessed an aromatic skeleton. The influences of medium composition and agitation conditions on…
Responses of Prunus ferganensis, Prunus persica and two interspecific hybrids to moderate drought stress
2003
Prunus ferganensis (Kost. & Riab) Kov. & Kost, a close relative of the cultivated peach (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch.), is native to arid regions of central Asia and may possess traits valuable for improving drought tolerance of commercial peach varieties. One distinguishing feature of P. ferganensis is its prominent, elongated, unbranched leaf venation pattern, which behaves as a simple recessive trait in segregating populations of P. ferganensis x P. persica hybrids. To understand whether this trait could be used as a marker in breeding for drought tolerance, we investigated the association between leaf morphological and physiological parameters related to drought response in P. ferganensi…
Synthesis, characterization and study of covalently modified triazole LAPONITE® edges
2020
Abstract LAPONITE® (Lap) clay mineral was successful functionalized by triazole groups in a two steps procedure. First, the Lap edges were modified with 3-azidopropyltrimethoxysilane by traditional heating and microwave irradiation. Microwave irradiation allowed us to obtain high loading onto the Lap edges in lower times compared to those obtained through conventional method. Afterwards, the triazole moieties were obtained by reaction between azido functionalized Lap and propargyl alcohol. The successful functionalization of Lap was proved by thermogravimetric analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering and ζ-potential measurements. Finally, the effects of the surface modificatio…
Preference and acceptability of partially dealcoholized white and red wines by consumers and professionals
2010
International audience; The influence of partial alcohol reduction in wine on consumer appreciation and acceptability was investigated. Two white wines (Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc) and two red wines (Merlot and Syrah) were partially dealcoholized using reverse osmosis to span a range of three different alcohol contents (14% to 10%) by grape variety. A group of 79 French wine consumers comparatively rated their appreciation of these wines, first in blind tasting conditions and then with added information. A group of 35 French wine professionals also comparatively rated their appreciation of the same wines in blind conditions and described them by rating the intensity of 10 informal descr…
Preliminary characterization of wild lactic acid bacteria and their abilities to produce flavour compounds in ripened model cheese system.
2007
Aims: The aim of this work was to preliminary characterize wild lactic acid bacteria (LAB), previously isolated during artisanal Pecorino Siciliano (PS) cheese-making for technological and flavour formation abilities in a model cheese system. Methods and Results: Twelve LAB were studied for the ability to grow at 10 and 45°C, to coagulate and acidify both reconstituted skim milk and ewe's milk. Moreover, the capacity of the strains to generate aroma compounds was evaluated in a model cheese system at 30- and 60-day ripening. Flavour compounds were screened by sensory analysis and throughout gas chromatography (GC)–mass spectrometry (MS). Most of the strains were able to grow both at 10 an…
