The hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) is the most threatened sea turtle species in the world. An important aspect of the biology of sea turtles is the study of colonizing fauna, i.e., their epibiota. The aim of this study is a taxonomic determination on the epibiota found on 4 hawksbills turtles stranded in 2009 and 2011 on the coast of Rocha Department, Uruguay. Epizooic ciliates (Vorticella sp.) compete for food with their host Daphnia longispina in a small polyhumic lake.

Clearance rates of epizooic ciliates (Vorticella sp.) were measured together with their host, a planktonic cladoceran Daphnia longispina by using fluorescent latex beads as tracers of food. Vorticellans and their host graze on food of same size range (nanoplanktonic algae and bacteria). Individual clearance rates of Vorticella averaged 6.9 and 7.0 μl ind-1 h-1 and those of Daphnia 463 and 708 μl ind-1 h-1 for beads with diameter 2.00 and 3.92 μm. On the average, epizooic vorticellans together on the carapace of Daphnia cleared particles with rates representing 25–33% of that the host cleared, the maximum rates being 50–80%. Supercritical fluid extraction of algae enhances levels of biologically active compounds promoting plant growth

The aim of this research was to screen plant growth biostimulant properties of supercritical CO2 macroalgal extracts. To this end secondary metabolites were isolated from the biomass of marine macroalgae from the Baltic Sea (species of Polysiphonia, Ulva and Cladophora). Chemical characteristics of the algal extracts were determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy for inorganic constituents and high-performance liquid chromatography and spectrophotometry for organic constituents. The fungal elicitor cryptogein induces cell wall modifications on tobacco cell suspension

Upon addition of the fungal elicitor cryptogein, suspension cells of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum cv. Xanthi) aggregated in clusters. Cytochemical experiments indicated that elicited cells displayed fibrillar expansions of pectin along the primary cell wall. Immunocytochemical detection of pectin epitopes indicated that the fibrillar material surrounding the treated cells was mostly composed of low methylated galacturonan sequences, but the use of the cationic probe did not reveal the presence of negatively charged carboxyl groups: the presence of important amounts of calcium ions in these pectic fibrillar expansions accounts for these observations. Arctic sea ice algae differ markedly from phytoplankton in their ecophysiological characteristics

Photophysiological and biochemical characteristics were investigated in natural communities of Arctic sea ice algae and phytoplankton to understand their respective responses towards variable irradiance and nutrient regimes. This study revealed large differences in photosynthetic efficiency and capacity between the 2 types of algal assemblages. Sea ice algal assemblages clearly displayed increased photoprotective energy dissipation under the highest daily average irradiance levels (>8 µmol photons m-2 s-1). Osmotrophic glucose and leucine assimilation and its impact on EPA and DHA content in algae

The uptake of dissolved organic compounds, that is, osmotrophy, has been shown to be an efficient nutritional strategy for algae. However, this mode of nutrition may affect the biochemical composition, for example, the fatty acid (FA) contents, of algal cells. This study focused on the osmotrophic assimilation of glucose and leucine by selected seven algal strains belonging to chlorophytes, chrysophytes, cryptophytes, dinoflagellates and euglenoids. We discuss EU legislation, including the law on medicinal products, foods including food supplements and food additives, feed and feed additives, cosmetics, packaging materials, fertilizers and biostimulants, as well as biofuels. Product safety and consumer protection are the priorities with any new products. Macroalgae products can be sold as traditional herbal medicines.
