Equal access to the top? Measuring selection into finnish academia
2019
In this article, we draw a parallel between equality of opportunity in educational transitions and equality of opportunity in academic careers. In both cases, many methodological problems can be ameliorated by the use of longitudinal rather than cross-sectional data. We illustrate this point by using Finnish full-population register data to follow the educational and academic careers of the 1964–1966 birth cohorts from birth to the present day. We show how the Finnish professoriate is highly selected both in terms of parental background and in terms of gender. Individuals of different backgrounds differ greatly in the likelihood of completing different educational and academic transitions, …

Sparse nonnegative tensor decomposition using proximal algorithm and inexact block coordinate descent scheme
2021
Nonnegative tensor decomposition is a versatile tool for multiway data analysis, by which the extracted components are nonnegative and usually sparse. Nevertheless, the sparsity is only a side effect and cannot be explicitly controlled without additional regularization. In this paper, we investigated the nonnegative CANDECOMP/PARAFAC (NCP) decomposition with the sparse regularization item using l1-norm (sparse NCP). When high sparsity is imposed, the factor matrices will contain more zero components and will not be of full column rank. Thus, the sparse NCP is prone to rank deficiency, and the algorithms of sparse NCP may not converge. In this paper, we proposed a novel model of sparse NCP w…
Computer aided scheduling and routing of vehicle-carrier fleet—a case study
2016
This paper presents a case study of development of an information system for a large enterprise from vehicle-transport industry. A novel optimization model and algorithms developed to solve scheduling and routing of vehicle-carrier fleet are presented and discussed. Carried out qualitative experiments confirmed the usability of developed user-guided search paradigm and high performance of autonomous algorithmic solution search methods.
The link of a finitely determined map germ from R 2 to R 2
2010
Let f: (R2, 0) → (R2, 0) be a finitely determined map germ. The link of f is obtained by taking a small enough representative f: U ⊂ R2 → R2 and the intersection of its image with a small enough sphere Sε1 centered at the origin in R2. We will describe the topology of f in terms of the Gauss word associated to its link.
Clean Agent Selection Approached by Fuzzy TOPSIS Decision-Making Method
2008
Abstract. It is well known that halons are ozone-depleting substances and their release into the atmosphere has contributed in the last decades to the reduction in the ozone layer. In consequence to the Montreal Protocol, an international agreement designed to gradually eliminate the use of such substances, fire protection industry researchers faced the challenge of finding effective solutions to replace halon extinguishers. This research aims to provide a method to support the decision maker in the selection of the most suitable extinguisher substance for a specific application. According to such framework, a set of quantitative and qualitative criteria has been established in the decision…
Intelligent Tutoring System in Archaeology
2019
A method that uses artificial intelligence for the taxonomical characterization of bone remains in archaeological sites is shown. The main goal of this method is to help students and archaeologists in the classification of samples in order to improve the efficiency of their tasks during the campaigns at archaeological sites. The development of the system implies several steps: training of classification algorithms, development of a user-friendly interface and implementation of gamification techniques to improve learning motivation and the efficiency of the system in the learning process. This system will help archaeology students to classify new samples. In this prototype, by introducing ch…

Demonstrating measure-correlate-predict algorithms for estimation of wind resources in central Finland
2010
In this study, measure-correlate-predict (MCP) algorithms - Simple Linear Regression and Variance Ratio Methods - for predicting wind speed were studied. The MCP algorithms were successfully used to predict missing wind speeds at two sites in Jyväskylä and Viitasaari, respectively. These two algorithms used data from one of the site to predict missing wind speed data at the other site. The results obtained using the MCP methods were compared using metrics that showed the characteristics of the predicted data to be unbiased compared to measured data. From the data of this study, we also evaluated wind power density at both sites which categorized the local wind resources as poor since the de…
Model organisms and their application in environmental epigenetics
2020
Abstract Epigenetic mechanisms operate at the interface between the environment and the genome of a given organism. More particularly, they convert environmental stimuli as diverse as chemical pollutants, nutritional components, temperature changes, and social conditions into changes in the chromatin landscape, which influence gene expression in the absence of alterations in the DNA sequence, ultimately leading to phenotype adaptation and diversification. The use of experimental model organisms in epigenetics research allows for the careful manipulation of environmental factors in order to understand how they mechanistically modulate the establishment, maintenance, and inheritance of epigen…
