Effect of graphene nanoplatelets on the dielectric permittivity and segmental motions of electrospun poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) nanofibers

The influence of the addition of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) on the intra/inter – molecular segmental motions of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH) was assessed by means of dielectric thermal analysis (DETA). The relaxation spectra were studied in terms of the dielectric permittivity (ε′) and the dielectric loss tangent (tan δ) at wide ranges of frequency (from 10−2 to 107 Hz) and temperature (from -150 to 140 °C). Two relaxation zones were disthinguished. Below the glass transition temperature (Tg), two β-relaxations were observed, which are characteristic local modes of mobility of the EVOH side groups, and related to the influence of the different surroundings of ethylene or vinyl …

Influence of Variety and Maturity Stage on Sterolic Composition of Virgin Olive Oil from Central-Western Sicily

Olive oil is one of the most important food products throughout the Mediterranean Basin due to its high nutritional and dietetic value. In recent years, there has been increased interest in the sterols of olive oil for their health benefts and their importance to virgin olive oil quality regulation. The impact of sterols on the human health is proved by several studies, showing that a suffcient quantity of β-sitosterol inhibits the intestinal absorption of LDL-cholesterol. In olive oil the phytosterol concentration ranges from 800 to 2600 mg kg-1. Vitamin D3 in fish oil extracted with limonene from anchovy leftovers

Abstract Aiming to identify and assess the amount of fat-soluble vitamins in anchovy oil extracted with d-limonene from anchovy fillet leftovers via the UHPLC–HESI–MS advanced mass spectrometry analytical technique, this study shows that only vitamin D3 is present in anchovy by-product oil. The sum of the quantities of the three isomers of vitamin D3 amounts to 0.0815 μg vitamin D3 per g oil, namely a 81.5 μg/kg content, in good agreement with the typical amounts of vitamin D3 in fish oils (ranging from 18 to 350 μg/kg).

This research aimed to analyze variations in chemical properties, microbiological characteristics and generated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) profile during sourdough fermentation. Sourdoughs were collected from different cities in Turkey at two different times and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in the samples were identified with culture-independent and culture-dependent molecular methods. According to culture-dependent methodology, thirteen LAB species were identified. Lactobacillus spp. were identified as the major group according to MiSeq Illumina analysis. In insects, xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes were demonstrated to regulate pheromones inactivation, clearing them from the olfactory periphery and keeping receptors ready for stimulation renewal. Here, we investigate whether similar processes could occur in mammals, focusing on the pheromonal communication between female rabbits and their newborns. Lactating rabbits emit in their milk a volatile aldehyde, 2-methylbut-2-enal, that elicits searching-grasping in neonates; called the mammary pheromone (MP), it is critical for pups which are constrained to find nipples within the 5 min of daily nursing.
