Vaginal infection of mice with HSV type 2 variant ER−: A new animal model for human primary genital HSV type 2 infections

Abstract Studying the pathogenesis of vaginal infections in mice with two variants of Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) strain ER we observed that both variants ER+ and ER− caused severe vaginitis but only ER+ invaded the CNS leading to lethal neurological disease. In contrast, mice infected with ER− cleared the virus from the vagina and recovered from infection. ER+ and ER− expressed equal levels of thymidine kinase (TK) indicating a TK-independent difference in neurovirulence. Infection-induced chromatin modifications facilitate translocation of herpes simplex virus capsids to the inner nuclear membrane

Herpes simplex virus capsids are assembled and packaged in the nucleus and move by diffusion through the nucleoplasm to the nuclear envelope for egress. Analyzing their motion provides conclusions not only on capsid transport but also on the properties of the nuclear environment during infection. We utilized live-cell imaging and single-particle tracking to characterize capsid motion relative to the host chromatin. The data indicate that as the chromatin was marginalized toward the nuclear envelope it presented a restrictive barrier to the capsids. A Cauchy viscoelastic problem perturbed by an inverse-square potential, and posed in an exterior domain of RN, is considered under a Dirichlet boundary condition. Using nonlinear capacity estimates specifically adapted to the non-local nature of the problem, the potential function and the boundary condition, we establish sufficient conditions for the nonexistence of weak solutions.

Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan visuaalista ajattelua sekä sen merkitystä kertovan elokuvan näyttämöllepanon suunnittelu- ja hahmotusprosessissa. Visuaalisella ajattelulla käsitetään mielikuvat, visuaalisen havaitsemisen Rudolf Arnheimin teorian mukaan sekä visuaaliseen kerrontaan liittyvän luovan, produktiivisen ajattelun. Tutkimus on osa kognitiivista elokuvatutkimusta ja pohjaa vahvasti hahmopsykologiaan sekä Rudolf Arnheimin visuaalisen havaitsemisen teoriaan. This socioculturally informed study explores how highly educated Finnish language learners represent their agency in visual narratives. Learners (n=59) were asked to draw two pictures of themselves as Finnish language users and provide verbal interpretations of the drawings. The aim of using visual narratives is to reach aspects such as feelings and beliefs which might be difficult to express verbally. The data were analyzed first by using visual grammar set out by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006) and secondly by content analysis. The findings suggest that learners saw Finnish language as a tool for oral communication. However, difficulties with speaking and listening appeared to restrict learn…

Oppimateriaaleilla ja muilla luokassa käytetyillä resursseilla on suuri vaikutus siihen, millaiseksi oppimisympäristö muotoutuu ja millaista toimintaa se mahdollistaa. Useat kansainväliset tutkimukset ovat osoittaneet, että visuaalisten ja multimodaalisten resurssien hyödyntäminen kielen opetuksessa auttaa rakentamaan oppimisympäristöä, joka on pedagogisesti rikas, motivoiva sekä monipuolisia oppimisprosesseja tukeva. Visuaalisuuden roolia suomalaisessa kielen oppimisen kontekstissa ei kuitenkaan ole tutkittu juuri lainkaan.
