Willem Boshoff, artist's monograph and catalogue
2013
Willem Boshoff’s work articulates around a pivotal date, April 1994, the first democratic elections in South Africa. He may choose to work gigantic rocks of granite or establish vast installations of accumulated material. The artist claims that his work is based on language, often taking the form of Dictionaries. While reviewing the main questions by artists of the twentieth century, texts or artworks from Europe are systematically tested against their South African counterpart. Boshoff’s attitude is determined by a melancholic questioning of his role as a creator linked to a political situation and cultural milieu. He discovers more dynamic ways of presenting gestures when his artistic act…

Effects of strength and endurance training on muscle fibrecharacteristics in elderly women
1997
The effects of 18 weeks' intensive strength and endurance training on fibre characteristics of the vastus lateralis muscle were studied in 76- to 78-year-old women. Type I and type IIa fibres constituted over 90% of the cell population and were almost equally represented. No changes were observed in the proportions of the different fibre types. When comparing the baseline and the 18-week measurements within the groups, the strength group showed a mean increase of 34% (P = 0.028) in mean type I fibre area. The frequency histograms showed an increased proportion of larger type I fibres after strength training and a decreased proportion of smaller type IIa fibres after endurance training. In t…
Pretreatment with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonists to prevent the flare-up effect of long-acting GnRH agonists: results of a pilot s…
2007
This study evaluated in vivo whether the flare-up effect of GnRH agonists can be suppressed through pretreatment with a GnRH antagonist. The classic flare-up effect caused by 3.8 mg goserelin acetate could not be suppressed through pretreatment using a single dosage of 3.24 mg cetrorelix acetate.
Agricultural management affects the response of soil bacterial community structure and respiration to water-stress
2013
International audience; Soil microorganisms are responsible for organic matter decomposition processes that regulate soil carbon storage and mineralisation to CO2. Climate change is predicted to increase the frequency of drought events, with uncertain consequences for soil microbial communities. In this study we tested the hypothesis that agricultural management used to enhance soil carbon stocks would increase the stability of microbial community structure and activity in response to water-stress. Soil was sampled from a long-term field trial with three soil carbon management systems and was used in a laboratory study of the effect of a dry wet cycle on organic C mineralisation and microbi…
Do properties and species of weed seeds affect their consumption by carabid beetles?
2019
International audience; Seed predators are an integral part of agroecosystems, where they can reduce the populations of weeds. The preference of predators for seeds and the observed predation rate may be affected by the properties of seeds (e.g. taxonomy, chemical composition, physical defence). In this work, we focused on seed consumption of Taraxacum officinale Web. and Stellaria media (L.) Vill., from France and the Czech Republic, by three species of ground beetle that are seed predators (Coleoptera: Carabidae): Poecilus cupreus (L.), Pterostichus melanarius (Illiger) and Anchomenus dorsalis (Pontoppidan). The seed species were offered in arenas, simultaneously, under three different ex…
