Density-Functional Theory on Graphs

The principles of density-functional theory are studied for finite lattice systems represented by graphs. Surprisingly, the fundamental Hohenberg–Kohn theorem is found void, in general, while many insights into the topological structure of the density-potential mapping can be won. We give precise conditions for a ground state to be uniquely v-representable and are able to prove that this property holds for almost all densities. A set of examples illustrates the theory and demonstrates the non-convexity of the pure-state constrained-search functional. peerReviewed

Weathering of evaporites: natural versus anthropogenic signature on the composition of river waters

Weathering of evaporites strongly influences the chemistry of continental runoff, making surface waters poorly exploitable for civil uses. In south-central Sicily, this phenomenon is worsened by the occurrence of abandoned landfills of old sulphur and salt mines. The industrial evolution of the Bosco-S. Cataldo mining site leaved two landfills from the early exploitation of a sulphur mine followed by that of a kainite deposit. In particular, the weathering of these landfills leads the dissolved salt (TDS) values up to about 200 g l−1 in the Stincone–Salito Stream waters. Abstract Both density functional theory calculations and numerous experimental studies demonstrate a variety of unique features in metal supported oxide films and transition metal doped simple oxides, which are markedly different from their unmodified counterparts. This article examines Vygotskian cultural-historical theory by putting it into dialogue with Stephen Pepper's root metaphor theory. I focus on Vygotsky's insistence on the dialectical unity of the phylogenetic and ontogenetic domains in ontogenesis, which he articulated in his account of how the natural-psychological and cultural-psychological lines of development merge with the emergence of speeching in ontogenesis. I compare Vygotsky's two genetic domains and Pepper's world hypotheses of organicism and contextualism. Tutkimuksessa analysoidaan Suomessa ensimmäisellä sortokaudella ilmestyneiden maanalaisten lentolehtien sisältämää vertauskuvallisuutta. Työn alkuperäislähteinä on käytetty poliittisen funktion omaavia lentolehtiä, pienpainatteita. Lentolehdet olivat luonteeltaan venäläisvastaisia ja niissä sortokauden oikeustaistelua edustaneet rintamat kävivät kiivasta kamppailua keskenään siitä, miten helmikuun manifestin mukanaan tuomiin venäläisiin asetuksiin oli suhtauduttava.
