Genetic database development for the characterisation of Sicilian sheep population

The most representative sheep in Sicily are Belicina, Comisana, Pinzirita, Barbarescaand the crossbred derived sheep from all this species. In this study, the allelic frequencies of the Sicilian sheep population were investigated. It currently represents the best way to determine the genetic identity and/or family even with limited amounts of sample or when the DNA is degraded. EZH2 mutations are frequent and represent an early event in follicular lymphoma

Gain of function mutations in the H3K27 methyltransferase EZH2 represent a promising therapeutic target in germinal center lymphomas. In this study, we assessed the frequency and distribution of EZH2 mutations in a large cohort of patients with follicular lymphoma (FL) (n = 366) and performed a longitudinal analysis of mutation during the disease progression from FL to transformed FL (tFL) (n = 33). Mutations were detected at 3 recurrent mutation hot spots (Y646, A682, and A692) in 27% of FL cases with variant allele frequencies (VAF) ranging from 2% to 61%. Association of aMAOAgene variant with generalized anxiety disorder, but not with panic disorder or major depression

This study was conducted to detect a possible association of a T941G single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) gene with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder (PD), or major depression (MD). Fifty GAD patients (34 females and 16 males), 38 PD patients (21 females and 17 males), and 108 MD patients (80 females and 28 males) were included. The comparison group consisted of 276 (132 females and 144 males) unrelated healthy individuals. One of the most promising genetic approaches to dissecting a multifactorial disease is represented by genetically isolated population studies. We studied a genetic marker in a cohort of women living on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa, a geographically isolated population. Objective To evaluate the frequency and type of vascular lesions and to study the association of factor V gene G1691A (Leiden) and prothrombin gene G20210A polymorphisms with venous thrombosis in Italian patients with Behcet's disease (BD). Methods Included were 118 consecutive Italian BD patients followed over a 3-year period (1997–1999) who satisfied the International Study Group criteria for BD. Epidemiology of retinitis pigmentosa in the valencian community (Spain)

The purposes of this study are to determine the frequencies of the different genetic forms of retinitis pigmentosa and to perform segregation analysis in the different genetic subtypes. Retinitis pigmentosa was diagnosed in 263 persons from 132 families. The frequency of the autosomal recessive type was the highest (31.8%) while the X-linked type was very rare (1.5%). The frequency of autosomal dominant type was 14.4% and the simplex cases constituted half of the total cases of RP registered in our community. Lactase persistence (LP), the dominant Mendelian trait conferring the ability to digest the milk sugar lactose in adults, has risen to high frequency in central and northern Europeans in the last 20,000 years. This trait is likely to have conferred a selective advantage in individuals who consume appreciable amounts of unfermented milk.
