[Diagnosis in pediatric "allergic" patients].

1998

Background. A clinician who deals with allergic patients needs the help of in vivo and in vitro allergometric tests in order to decide difficult therapeutic choices. Methods. In the section of Clinical Immunology of the Institute of Paediatrics (Palermo University) two allergologic tests, prick and MAST-CIA, have been studied retrospectively, they were performed on patients observed for allergic disorders over 5 years. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic capacity of these tests "on the field". The study population is made of 459 patients (age range from 6 months to 16 years) affected with asthma, rhinitis, presumably allergic dermatitis, association of asthma and dermatitis…

Anti-acids lead to immunological and morphological changes in the intestine of BALB/c mice similar to human food allergy

2008

Abstract We have shown that anti-acid medication for treating dyspeptic disorders can block protein digestion and induce a higher risk for food sensitization. This mechanism was confirmed in human and animal studies on the humoral as well as the cellular level. Here we aimed to investigate the outcome of the treatment with the anti-acid drug sucralfate on the intestine in our murine model, assuming that morphological and immunological changes will occur. BALB/c mice were fed codfish extract plus sucralfate. Antibodies were examined in ELISA, RBL assay and Western blot. Quantitative morphological analysis of the intestine was performed by design-based stereology, focussing on epithelium, lam…

Medical Research and Innovation

2021

This volume is dedicated to multidisciplinary research at the interface between basic biomedicine and clinical practice. This book guides best practice in the diagnosis and therapy while dealing with difficult-to-treat disorders of yet unclear etiology. Chapters address such disorders as granulomatosis with polyangiitis causing autoimmune-related multiorgan inflammation of blood vessels, increasingly widespread allergy to peanuts, occupational exposure to zinc oxide, and immunogenic responses to pneumococcal and influenza vaccination underlying their preventive effectiveness. Other hot issues deal with the proper use of fluid therapy in the perioperative period and a cognitive decline in lu…

H1 antihistamīna bezrecepšu medikamentu aprite Rīgas aptiekā, laika posmā no 2014. gada 1.janvāra līdz 2014. gada 31. decembrim

2015

Revalorization of Almond By-Products for the Design of Novel Functional Foods: An Updated Review

2021

The search for waste minimization and the valorization of by-products are key to good management and improved sustainability in the food industry. The great production of almonds, based on their high nutritional value as food, especially almond kernels, generates tons of waste yearly. The remaining parts (skin, shell, hulls, etc.) are still little explored, even though they have been used as fuel by burning or as livestock feed. The interest in these by-products has been increasing, as they possess beneficial properties, caused by the presence of different bioactive compounds, and can be used as promising sources of new ingredients for the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry. Additio…

Climate Change and Childhood Respiratory Health: A Call to Action for Paediatricians

2020

Climate change (CC) is one of the main contributors to health emergencies worldwide. CC appears to be closely interrelated with air pollution, as some pollutants like carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and black carbon are naturally occurring greenhouse gases. Air pollution may enhance the allergenicity of some plants and, also, has an adverse effect on respiratory health. Children are a uniquely vulnerable group that suffers disproportionately from CC burden. The increasing global warming related to CC has a big impact on plants’ lifecycles, with earlier and longer pollen seasons, as well as higher pollen production, putting children affected by asthma and allergic rhinitis at ris…

Asthma after consumption of snails in house-dust-mite-allergic patients: a case of IgE cross-reactivity

1996

A group of 28 patients from Italy was studied who had asthma after consumption of snail. All patients also had asthma and/or rhinitis caused by house-dust mite. RAST analyses confirmed the combined sensitization to snail and mite. In a few sera, IgE antibodies reactive with other foods of invertebrate origin (mussel and shrimp) were detected. RAST inhibition showed that most IgE antibodies against snail were cross-reactive with house-dust mite. In contrast, the mite RAST was not significantly inhibited by snail. This indicates that house-dust mite was the sensitizing agent. Immunoblot analyses revealed multiple bands in snail extract recognized by IgE. In contrast to what has been described…

Efficacy of recombinant adenovirus as vector for allergen gene therapy in a mouse model of type I allergy

2001

DNA-based immunization represents an attractive alternative approach to the current treatment of allergic diseases by specific immunotherapy with allergen extracts. In this study, we used a replication-deficient adenovirus vector (AdCMV), to examine the in vivo efficacy of preventive and therapeutic genetic immunization in a mouse model of type I allergy. Primary immunization with a recombinant adenovirus expressing the model antigen beta-galactosidase (AdCMV-(beta)gal) induced a Th1 immune response (predominance of IgG2a antibodies, high frequency of IFN-gamma producing T cells) and large numbers of cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Prophylactic vaccination with AdCMV-(beta)gal abolished the produc…
