The Mediterranean Sea hosts endemic haplotypes and a distinct population of the dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus Linnaeus, 1758 (Perciformes, Coryphae…

2017

Abstract The dolphinfish, Coryphaena hippurus Linnaeus, 1758, is an important target species for Mediterranean artisanal, recreational and commercial fisheries but to date only scarce genetic data are available for its Mediterranean population(s). The genetic variation of Mediterranean dolphinfishes was thus investigated through the sequencing of fragments of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene and the NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (ND1) mitochondrial DNA markers with the explicit aims of (i) testing for significant genetic differentiation of the Mediterranean vs . non-Mediterranean populations of the species, and (ii) investigating the possible presence of molecular structuring wi…

Gadoria (Antirrhineae, Plantaginaceae): A new genus, endemic from Sierra de Gádor, Almería, Spain

2017

The surprising discovery of a population of a new species of Antirrhineae (Plantaginaceae) has also given rise to the description of a new genus situated in the subtribe Maurandyinae: Gadoria falukei. This is supported by the characteristics of the flower, pollen grains, seeds and capsule, and phylogenetic results based on DNA sequences. The species is endemic from Sierra de Gádor, Almería, Spain. Scanning electron microscopy was used to explore micromorphology of the capsule, indument, and seed and pollen grains ornamentation. Additionally, chromosomal number, preliminary insights on reproductive biology, phylogenetic position within Antirrhineae, ecological data and conservation status of…

Pintura califal de Bédar (Almería, 355/966)

2020

PATHS TO COOPERATIVE SURVIVAL: STRUCTURE, STRATEGY AND REGENERATION OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES COOPERATIVES IN ALMERÍA AND VALENCIA, SPAIN

2014

Two important Spanish fruit and vegetable (F&V) producing areas of Almeria and Valencia in which agricultural cooperatives and smallholder and family farmers play a vital role are compared. Their F&V cooperatives have distinct development paths and have adopted different structures and strategies, attributable to historical, cultural and political circumstance, infrastructure, regulation and policy measures and/or international exposure. In considering the factors which contribute to agricultural cooperative success or failure, persistent atomization is often cited as inhibiting the ability of cooperatives to thrive. While not discounting that economies of scale may be important, we argue f…
