From abugida to alphabet in Konso, Ethiopia
2019
Abstract This study examines the interplay between phonological awareness and orthography in Konso, a Cushitic language in Southwest Ethiopia. Thirty-two adults reading the Konso abugida but with minimal exposure to alphabetic literacy completed an orally administered phoneme deletion task. The responses were then examined using the minimal edit distance hypothesis (Wali, Sproat, Padakannaya & Bhuvaneshwari, 2009) as a framework for the analysis. The results suggest that the difficulty of a deletion was related to the way the phoneme was represented in the Konso abugida. Content-based error analysis of the incorrect responses gave indications of how Konso abugida readers’ processing of …

The author asserts that the dictionary shall consist of four parts: alphabetic and thematic (ideographic) list of terminology as well as alphabetic and thematic list of scholarly works, which were the source of the given terminology. The article consists examples of dictionary entries.
Statistical properties of general Markov dynamical sources: applications to information theory
2004
In \textitDynamical sources in information theory: fundamental intervals and word prefixes, B. Vallée studies statistical properties of words generated by dynamical sources. This is done using generalized Ruelle operators. The aim of this article is to generalize sources for which the results hold. First, we avoid the use of Grotendieck theory and Fredholm determinants, this allows dynamical sources that cannot be extended to a complex disk or that are not analytic. Second, we consider Markov sources: the language generated by the source over an alphabet \textbfM is not necessarily \textbfM^*.

Digital game-based training of early reading skills : overview of the GraphoGame method in a highly transparent orthography / Entrenamiento de habili…
2014
Learning to read in a language with a transparent orthography is generally quick and easy. To be able to read any words, learners need to know how to connect the smallest spoken language units, phonemes, into the written counterparts, graphemes. However, even learning the basic alphabetic principle has proven difficult for some learners. Here we focus on children who struggle to learn to read in Finnish that has a highly transparent orthography. In an attempt to provide efficient early preventative support for such learners, a technologyenhanced learning environment, GraphoGame, was developed. The GraphoGame method focuses on the specific problematic areas of each individual learner using a…
The written voice of Korea
2018
The theme of language and nationalism may be approached via various routes. Among these, I choose Hangul, the invented alphabet of Korea, which, I believe, Koreans can by no means separate from the language. To the Korean people, Hangul is the very Korean language and vice versa. They tend to identify the Korean language and its alphabet as a unity, like the body and the soul. It is not rare for Korean-language teachers abroad to be misaddressed as Hangul teachers. I presume that the unity in the Korean mind has been concretely formed through the turmoil of late modern history, although Hangul has been influencing Korean society since the 1440s. To look at ‘language and nationalism’ in Kore…
Problema fonetyčnoji transkrypciji napivpomjakšenych pryholosych u pidručnykach z ukrajins'koji movy jak inozemnoji
2020
