The Pyrenean-Cantabrian Orogen arose through the collision of the Iberian and Eurasian plates, mostly in Cenozoic times. This orogen comprises two main mountain ranges, the Pyrenees to the east, and the Cantabrian Mountains to the west. To date, the early Alpine tectono-sedimentary phases preserved in the Cantabrian Mountains, of Permian and Triassic age, have been considered independently from the same phases in neighbouring basins of SW Europe, and even from the eastern part of the same orogeny (the Pyrenean orogeny). Aims: To complete the syntaxonomical scheme for the steppe vegetation of the montane and alpine zones in the Pamir Alai and southwestern Tian-Shan Mountains in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan with some remarks on its environmental predictors. Location: Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. Methods: A total of 274 relevés were sampled in 2016–2017 using the seven-degree cover-abundance scale of Braun-Blanquet. They were classified with modified TWINSPAN with cut-off levels of 0%, 5%, 10% and 25% and total inertia as a measure of cluster heterogeneity. International audience; Workgroup 3 of the ArchaeDyn II programme aims at studying the diffusion systems of products in ancient times. In order to be able to structure data in GIS in an appropriate way, we propose to go through three levels of modelling: the first one aims at gathering together the different components of the diffusion systems taking into account their interactions; the second corresponds to a conceptual data model created with the help of the HBDS method, that will, as we get to the third stage, lead to the creation of a "three-dimensional" geodatabase. Abstract New geochronological and geochemical data on basement orthogneisses from the Vertiskos Unit of the Serbo-Macedonian Massif (SMM), Internal Hellenides, northern Greece, are used in order to constrain the pre-Alpine tectonic history of the basement units in the metamorphic hinterland of the Hellenides. The prevailing rock types in the Vertiskos crystalline basement are coarse-grained biotite augengneisses with subordinate leucocratic muscovite gneisses and two-mica gneisses. Zircon Pb–Pb and U–Pb ages on 20 samples range from 425.9 ± 4.2 Ma to 443.4 ± 5.5 Ma with a mean of 432.2 ± 3.2 Ma and are interpreted as primary crystallisation ages of the basement granites on the basis of the …

Plant species tend to retain their ancestral ecology, responding to temporal, geographic and climatic changes by tracking suitable habitats rather than adapting to novel conditions. Nevertheless, transitions into different environments or biomes still seem to be common. Especially intriguing are the tropical alpine-like areas found on only the highest mountainous regions surrounded by tropical environments. Tropical mountains are hotspots of biodiversity, often with striking degrees of endemism at higher elevations. Arctic and alpine biomes are most often strongly nitrogen-limited, and hence biological nitrogen fixation is a strong driver of these ecosystems. Both biomes are characterized by low temperatures and short growing seasons, but they differ in seasonality of solar radiation and in soil water balance due to underlying permafrost in the Arctic. Arcto-alpine plant species are well-adapted to the low temperatures that prevail in their habitats, and plant growth is mainly limited by the availability of nutrients, in particular nitrogen, due to slow mineralization. The paper presents the results of phytosociological research on spring and fen vegetation of the western Pamir-Alai Mountains in Tajikistan. In total, 211 relevés were sampled during field studies conducted in 2008–2013 and 2015 with application of the Braun-Blanquet method. Plant communities of spring heads and peat-accumulated fens inhabiting the high montane and alpine zones in the Zeravshan, Hissar, Hazratishoh, Darvaz, Turkestan and Peter the 1st Mountains are described.
