Printmaking during the First World War: the ‘unseen moving goal’

International audience; The broad aim of this chapter is to examine the ethical function of wartime art during the FOrst World War. It focuses on printmaking in the context of the revival of the graphic arts and draws from the theory of craft to determine how media such as lithography and wood-engraving contributed to an ethics of the creative gesture in a way that differed from photography and painting. As specific modes of individual expression and responsiveness, they displayed a utopian ideal that conveyed an implicit critique of mechanised war.

The use of the French adjective “malsain” (usually translated in English as “unhealthy,” “unwholesome” or “sick”) to judge a work of art has led me to question the relevance of this metaphor, the way this value is determined, the reasons which lead the subject to consume shocking material and the possibility to distinguish art from mere symptom. I consider the unhealthy, on the one hand, as a relation of transmission which produces an aesthetic based on metaphor and metonymy, and on the other, as a subjective value delivered by a self or a law, and I argue that, as it is entirely discursive, the unhealthy is in effect an uncanny metonymy. In several short stories, Sean O'Faolain ponders over the complexity of love relationships and tries to unveil some of the unconscious motivations underlying them. This essay focuses on three of these short stories, namely "There's a Birdie in the Cage", "Discord" and "An Inside Outside Complex", and shows how, in each of them, the fissures or cracks in love relationships are figuratively represented by an isotopy of windows, the various qualities of which are artfully exploited by O'Faolain (the window as partition between contiguous spaces, as transparent filter, as surface or frame).
