Masonry Sail Vaults in Maltese Architecture: Geometrical Analysis for the Study of Building Processes

This research concerns the introduction and dissemination of masonry sail vaults in Malta between the sixteenth and the eighteenth centuries. A digital survey is produced to capture a reality-based 3D model, undertake analysis, and compare case studies with the aim of interpreting the sail vaults' construction systems.

ABSTRACTIn this work, the decision-making process involved in the restoration of the eighteenth century paliotto ligneo (wooden altar frontal) della chiesa del Santissimo Crocifisso all’Albergheria of Palermo is presented. Earlier research concerning mirror restoration was based on only a few case studies and the proposed techniques were not suitable for the artwork here. As a consequence, it was necessary to re-examine theories and protocols of modern restoration to plan an appropriate intervention of the altar frontal. This study will examine the economic issues surrounding crime and reintegration measures aimed at prisoners, particularly but not exclusively in Germany. To do so it will be necessary to give an overview about the crime and crime-fighting situation in Germany. The focus is on violent and street crime. White collar crime will be mentioned only briefly. The starting point will be to examine the cost of crime and the problems concerning its measurement. These include for example the economic costs of murder or the largely ignored cost of rehabilitating the victims of crimes such as rape. They often suffer from severe trauma. En el contexto de la crisis actual los trabajadores y trabajadoras pobres son una nueva realidad y las tasas de pobreza en España se encuentran entre las más altas de Europa. Habitualmente la pobreza se relacionada con el desempleo y la jubilación. Pero desde 2007 las características de las personas afectadas han cambiado radicalmente. Observation of the suppression of the flux of cosmic rays above 4x10^19eV

The energy spectrum of cosmic rays above 2.5 × 10¹⁸ eV, derived from 20,000 events recorded at the Pierre Auger Observatory, is described. The spectral index γ of the particle flux, J ∝ E-γ, at energies between 4 × 10¹⁸ eV and 4 × 10¹⁹ eV is 2.69 ± 0.02(stat) ± 0.06(syst), steepening to 4.2 ± 0.4(stat) ± 0.06(syst) at higher energies. The hypothesis of a single power law is rejected with a significance greater than 6 standard deviations. The data are consistent with the prediction by Greisen and by Zatsepin and Kuz'min.
Upper limit on the diffuse flux of ultrahigh energy tau neutrinos from the Pierre Auger Observatory

The surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory is sensitive to Earth-skimming tau neutrinos that interact in Earth’s crust. Tau leptons from ντ charged-current interactions can emerge and decay in the atmosphere to produce a nearly horizontal shower with a significant electromagnetic component. The data collected between 1 January 2004 and 31 August 2007 are used to place an upper limit on the diffuse flux of ντ at EeV energies. Assuming an E−2ν differential energy spectrum the limit set at 90% C.L. is E2νdNντdEν<1.3×10−7 GeV cm−2 s−1 sr−1 in the energy range 2×1017 eV<E<2×1019 eV.

Ce travail se propose d'explorer le thème de l'intime dans l'œuvre de Baltasar Gracián à partir de trois angles complémentaires : sa réflexion sur le sens et le langage dans Agudeza y arte de ingenio, sa formulation d'une morale qui alterne dissimulation et connaissance de soi dans Oráculo manual y arte de prudencia et, enfin, les nombreuses figures et allégories qu'il met en scène dans El Criticón, sa dernière œuvre. Il ressort de ce parcours que l'intimité ou le propre de l'individu se définit plus facilement par ses capacités que par des valeurs ou des normes classiques.
