Charles Nodier, Trilogie écossaise
2013
Charles Nodier’s summer ambulations through Scotland in 1821 were to spawn a genre: the romantic travelogue. The reader is invited on a journey through age-old legends and oneiric cartography, through the fogs of ancient Caledonia and modern Scotland, and into the land of goblins and fairies.
Induction of stress resistance and extension of lifespan in Chaenorhabditis elegans serotonin-receptor knockout strains by withanolide A
2021
Abstract Introduction Approximately 300 million people worldwide suffer from depression. The COVID-19 crisis may dramatically increase these numbers. Severe side effects and resistance development limit the use of standard antidepressants. The steroidal lactone withanolide A (WA) from Withania somnifera may be a promising alternative. Caenorhabditis elegans was used as model to explore WA's anti-depressive and anti-stress potential. Methods C. elegans wildtype (N2) and deficient strains (AQ866, DA1814, DA2100, DA2109 and MT9772) were used to assess oxidative, osmotic or heat stress as measured by generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), determination of lifespan, and mRNA expression of …
Is There Life Outside of the European Union? Lower Silesians’ Opinions About the Alternatives to the EU Membership
2017
This paper answers the question about the alternatives to the European Union membership (and its consequences) conceptualised by the inhabitants of Lower Silesia. To achieve this goal, this text delivers and discusses the empirical data, both quantitative and qualitative, answering the sub-questions if and how their lives have changed as a result of the accession to the EU as well as what are the alternatives, namely: How would our lives have looked like if Poland had not joined the EU in 2004? The article is empirical at its heart. It is built on some fresh data from an extensive research project conducted in 2014 – at the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the EU ‘big bang’ enlargement.…
Characteristics of honeymoon tourism: Chinese tourist approach
2017
ABSTRACT Within alternative tourism framework, the aim of this paper is to research tourism honeymoon, to choose the destination and to study Chinese…
TLR4 elimination prevents synaptic and myelin alterations and long-term cognitive dysfunctions in adolescent mice with intermittent ethanol treatment.
2015
The adolescent brain undergoes important dynamic and plastic cell changes, including overproduction of axons and synapses, followed by rapid pruning along with ongoing axon myelination. These developmental changes make the adolescent brain particularly vulnerable to neurotoxic and behavioral effects of alcohol. Although the mechanisms of these effects are largely unknown, we demonstrated that ethanol by activating innate immune receptors toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), induces neuroinflammation and brain damage in adult mice. The present study aims to evaluate whether intermittent ethanol treatment in adolescence promotes TLR4-dependent pro-inflammatory processes, leading to myelin and synapti…
Involvement of complement pathways in patients with bacterial septicemia.
2007
The complement system is a major humoral portion of the innate immune system, playing a significant role in host defence against microorganisms. The biological importance of this system is underlined by the fact that at least three different pathways for its activation exist, the classical, the MBL and the alternative pathway. To elucidate the involvement of the classical and/or the MBL pathway during bacterial septicemia, 32 patients with gram-positive and 30 patients with gram-negative bacterial infections were investigated. In patients with gram-positive bacteria, a significant consumption of C1q (p=0.005) but not of mannose-binding lectin (MBL) (p=0.2) was found during the acute phase o…
Genetics for Pseudoalteromonas provides tools to manipulate marine bacterial virus PM2
2008
ABSTRACT The genetic manipulation of marine double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) bacteriophage PM2 ( Corticoviridae ) has been limited so far. The isolation of an autonomously replicating DNA element of Pseudoalteromonas haloplanktis TAC125 and construction of a shuttle vector replicating in both Escherichia coli and Pseudoalteromonas enabled us to design a set of conjugative shuttle plasmids encoding tRNA suppressors for amber mutations. Using a host strain carrying a suppressor plasmid allows the introduction and analysis of nonsense mutations in PM2. Here, we describe the isolation and characterization of a suppressor-sensitive PM2 sus2 mutant deficient in the structural protein P10. To infect an…
Vezatin, a novel transmembrane protein, bridges myosin VIIA to the cadherin-catenins complex
2000
International audience; Defects in myosin VIIA are responsible for deafness in the human and mouse. The role of this unconventional myosin in the sensory hair cells of the inner ear is not yet understood. Here we show that the C-terminal FERM domain of myosin VIIA binds to a novel transmembrane protein, vezatin, which we identi®ed by a yeast two-hybrid screen. Vezatin is a ubiquitous protein of adherens cell±cell junctions, where it interacts with both myosin VIIA and the cadherin±catenins complex. Its recruitment to adherens junctions implicates the C-terminal region of a-catenin. Taken together, these data suggest that myosin VIIA, anchored by vezatin to the cadherin±catenins complex, cre…
