Brain lateralization of metrical accenting in musicians.

The perception of meter, or the alternation of strong and weak beats, was assessed in musically trained listeners through magnetoencephalography. Metrical accents were examined with no temporal disruption of the serial grouping of tones. Results showed an effect of metrical processing among identical standard tones in the left hemisphere, with larger responses on strong than on weak beats. Moreover, processing of occasional increases in intensity (phenomenal accents) varied as a function of metrical position in the left hemisphere, but not in the right. Our findings support the view of a relatively early, left-hemispheric effect of metrical processing in musicians.
Ureteral realignment with combined access as a treatment of complete ureteral transection.

Ureteral realignment using a ureteral stent can be an alternative treatment in cases of complete ureteral transection and may avoid the need for reconstructive surgery. The combined access can help the passage of the guidewire through the injured area and the threading of the urinary system of the patient. We present a case of a 38-year-old man with multiples abdominal surgeries, who underwent a complete ureteral section treated with ureteral realignment with combined access. The subsequent evolution was favourable, with resolution of the ureteral injury at the acute time, and without the presence of long-term obstruction. Abstract Objective Thiamine or vitamin B 1 deficiency diminishes thiamine-dependent enzymatic activity, alters mitochondrial function, impairs oxidative metabolism, and causes selective neuronal death. Initial Evaluation of a Smoking Cessation Program Incorporating Physical Activity Promotion to Greek Adults in Antismoking Clinics

The purpose of this study was to evaluate an initial application of a smoking cessation program that integrated the promotion of physical activity (PA) as a cessation aid to Greek adults in antismoking clinics. From an initial pool of 50, 12 men and 28 women from Central Greece completed the program, and 18 of them succeeded in quitting for 1 year after the program. Additionally, after the program, they increased their PA. Suggestions for future applications of the program are further discussed. peerReviewed

Purpose: Urethroplasty with a buccal mucosal graft provides excellent clinical results but it may also cause oral complications in some cases. The mucosa covering the lateral and under surface of the tongue is identical in structure with that lining the rest of the oral cavity. Background Many patients avoid dental appointments because of severe gagging when they have work performed, such as taking impressions. There are several methods known to alleviate gagging, and some studies have suggested that acupuncture may be effective in reducing gag reflex. The influence of vibration-induced white finger disease on the quality of life and possible social consequences is the subject of the study presented herein.The data acquisition was carried out by means of a standardized questionnaire. Parameters such as quality of life, professional practice, prevention and social security were assessed among other things.Nearly three quarters of the interviewees (n = 115) did not consult a physician with the occurrence of the first complaints. Emotional Self-Regulation Therapy: A New and Efficacious Treatment for Smoking

Abstract We describe emotional self-regulation therapy, a recently-developed suggestion technique for the treatment of smoking, and present data attesting to its efficacy. Of the 38 individuals who completed treatment, 82% (47% of the initial sample) stopped smoking altogether and 13% (8%of the initial sample) reduced their smoking. A follow-up at 6 months showed that 66% (38% of the initial sample) of those who had completed the treatment remained abstinent and reported minimal withdrawal symptoms or weight gain. In a no-treatment comparison group, only 8% reduced their smoking or became abstinent.
Perceived barriers to and facilitators of being physically active during adjuvant cancer treatment

The aim was to describe cancer patients' perceived barriers and facilitators of physical activity during adjuvant cancer treatment.Semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with patients with breast cancer (n=9) and colorectal cancer (n=1) and prostate cancer (n=8) undergoing adjuvant cancer treatment.
