Salt spray fog ageing of hybrid composite/metal rivet joints for automotive applications

2017

Abstract The present experimental investigation aims to investigate the effect of salt-fog exposition on the mechanical behaviour of composite/metal riveted joints. To this aim, two kinds of joint were exposed to salt-fog environmental conditions according to ASTM B117 standard, for fifteen weeks. In particular, two composite laminates (i.e. glass fibre and carbon fibre/epoxy composites) were used as composite substrate joined with the metal substrate (i.e. aluminium alloy Al 6060). Single-lap shear tests were carried out in order to evaluate the evolution of the mechanical performances and the damage mechanisms of the riveted joints during the ageing exposition. The results evidence that t…

Power ultrasound irradiation during the alkaline etching process of the 2024 aluminium alloy

2015

Abstract Prior to any surface treatment on an aluminum alloy, a surface preparation is necessary. This commonly consists in performing an alkaline etching followed by acid deoxidizing. In this work, the use of power ultrasound irradiation during the etching step on the 2024 aluminum alloy was studied. The etching rate was estimated by weight loss, and the alkaline film formed during the etching step was characterized by glow discharge optical emission spectrometry (GDOES) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The benefit of power ultrasound during the etching step was confirmed by pitting potential measurement in NaCl solution after a post-treatment (anodizing).

Control of barium ferrite decomposition during spark plasma sintering: Towards nanostructured samples with anisotropic magnetic properties

2014

Abstract The sintering of barium ferrite (BaM) nano-sized powders by spark plasma sintering was studied. At the surface of the samples, an iron-rich layer (magnetite) was formed due to the decomposition of BaM and segregation in the secondary phases. To prevent the formation of secondary phases different protection layers between the graphite mould and the sample were used. Their effect on the sample microstructure was studied by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The most suitable protection layer was a highly dense sintered disc of aluminium oxide. Using this dense protection layer, sintered discs of BaM with 82% of theoretical density and grains of 90 ± 50 nm were obtain…

Modeling glass materials

2005

Abstract Structural and dynamic properties of silicate melts and glasses (SiO 2 and its mixtures with Na 2 O and Al 2 O 3 ) are derived from Molecular Dynamics simulations and compared to pertinent experimental data. It is shown that these mixtures exhibit additional intermediate order as compared to pure silica, where the characteristic length scales stem from the tetrahedral network structure. While sodium ions show much faster diffusion through percolating channels than the silicon and oxygen ions forming the surrounding network, aluminium ions are incorporated into the network (leading to tricluster formation) and do not show such an enhanced mobility.

Aluminum oxide/titanium dioxide nanolaminates grown by atomic layer deposition: Growth and mechanical properties

2017

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is based on self-limiting surface reactions. This and cyclic process enable the growth of conformal thin films with precise thickness control and sharp interfaces. A multilayered thin film, which is nanolaminate, can be grown using ALD with tuneable electrical and optical properties to be exploited, for example, in the microelectromechanical systems. In this work, the tunability of the residual stress, adhesion, and mechanical properties of the ALD nanolaminates composed of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) films on silicon were explored as a function of growth temperature (110-300 C), film thickness (20-300 nm), bilayer thickness (0.1-100 nm),…

Structure formation and properties of corundum ceramics based on metastable aluminium oxide doped with stabilized zirconium dioxide

2021

Abstract The work presents a successful example of the use of YSZ binary systems for production of composite ceramic materials based on θ-Al2O3 with improved physical and mechanical characteristics which was previously considered an unpromising material. It was first obtained result of extreme nature of dependence of physical and mechanical properties of Al2O3+YSZ on the concentration of YSZ (ZrO2–3mol% of Y2O3) additive. The sintering temperature was decreased on 250 °C (from 1800 to 1550 °C). The phase composition of powders and the structure of ceramics of the Al2O3 + YSZ system were investigated depending on the amount of YSZ dopant, the structure-properties relationship was established…

Effect of thermal treatment on the structural evolution of 3:2 and 2:1 mullite monophasic gels

2005

Abstract Single phase mullite gels with composition 3Al2O3 · 2SiO2 (3:2) and 2Al2O3 · SiO2 (2:1) were prepared by the semialkoxide method using aluminum nitrate nonahydrate and tetraethylorthosilicate as reagents. The influence of the thermal processing conditions on the reaction sequence was investigated. Both 3:2 and 2:1 mullite gels formed orthorhombic mullite under fast heating (40 °C/min) at 900 °C. Slow heatings delayed the formation of mullite in both gel compositions but no formation of spinel was detected between 1000 °C and 1100 °C. The slow transformation of pentacoordinated aluminum to octahedral and tetrahedral arrangements probably depends on the larger size and extent of the …

Influence of Plastic Deformation on the Corrosion Behaviour of As-Cast AlMg2 and AlCu4Mg1 Aluminium Alloys in NaCl Solution

2015

The influence of plastic deformation on the corrosion behavior of as-cast AlMg2 and AlCu4Mg1 aluminum alloys was studied at the microscale using the Electrochemical Microcell Technique and surface microgauges. It was shown that large strain gradients develop locally. The corrosion behavior of both alloys was affected by plastic deformation. The most active sites contain large strain gradients in AlMg2 and cracks with damage in the matrix in AlCu4Mg1.

Friction Stir Welding of steels process design through a continuum based fem model

2009

AbstractFriction stir welding (FSW) has been reaching a continuously increasing popularity among joining processes since its invention in 1991. Although mainly used for aluminium alloys, it has been successfully applied also to steels. In the present paper, a continuum based FEM model for FSW of steels is proposed, which is three-dimensional Lagrangian implicit, coupled, rigid viscoplastic. The model, whose potential has been analysed through temperature distribution comparisons, is able to predict temperature, strain and strain rate distributions, together with thermal and mechanical loads on the welding tool, at varying main process variables. In this way, the FEM model can be used for pr…
