Le traduzioni dall’inglese nelle prime due serie della Biblioteca dell’Economista : ipotesi di studio da una prospettiva linguistica

2011

From 1850 to 1868, the Sicilian economist Francesco Ferrara was editor-in-chief of the Biblioteca dell’Economista, a series of economic treatises – published in Italy and abroad – among the best known and most important of that period. Ferrara and his assistants, among whom was his friend Emerico Amari, translated scores of economic pages into Italian laying the foundation to the specialized translation in the economic field. They also contributed to the development and further specialization of an Italian economic lexicon. This paper provides three research targets on Ferrara’s and Amari’s work from a linguistic point of view. The three proposals, already part of a study project carried ou…

Fast volatilization of some lanthanide and actinide elements from titanium surfaces

1989

The ad- and desorption of trace quantities of the lanthanide elements lanthanum, praseodymium, neodymium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, dysprosium, and ytterbium and of the actinide elements americium and curium were investigated by thermochromatographic and isothermal measurements with hot titanium columns. The adsorption enthalpies deduced from the experimental data are in reasonable agreement with calculated values which indicate considerable variations in volatility under such conditions. More volatile elements can quickly be separated from less volatile elements by heating the mixture on titanium in high vacuum.

The application of neutron activation analysis, scanning electron microscope, and radiographic imaging for the characterization of electrochemically …

2008

Lanthanide and actinide targets are prepared at the University of Mainz by molecular plating, an electrochemical deposition from an organic solvent, for heavy-ion reaction studies at GSI. To acquire information about deposition yield, target thickness, and target homogeneity, the following analysis methods are applied. With neutron activation analysis (NAA) the deposition yield and the average thickness of the deposited material is determined. We report on the analytical procedure of NAA performed subsequent to the molecular plating process. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) is used to determine the morphology of the target surfaces. In combination with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer…

Effect of the remaining lanthanide catalysts on the hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation of poly-(ε-caprolactone)

2003

Poly-(e-caprolactone) is a biodegradable polymer, which can be used for both medical and environmental applications. Due to its multiple applications the synthesis of such a polymer has been attracting an increasing attention in the past few decades. In our work, the polymers were synthesised by bulk polymerisation, using different lanthanide halides as initiators. The lanthanide derivatives are known as very active catalysts in the ring-opening polymerisation of cyclic esters. Moreover, they are not toxic in comparison of catalysts, which are usually used for this synthesis. In this paper, the influence of the lanthanides on both the hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation of the PCL obtained…

(Table 1) Geochemistry of ODP Site 160-963 sediments

2010

The Mediterranean Sea acts as a miniature ocean with the development of its own conveyor belt. It constitutes an ideal location to study and forecast how the marine environment responds to rapid climatic change. Here we present a palaeoenvironmental study carried out on the sediments of ODP Site 963, recovered in the Sicily Channel, the sill which divides the western from the eastern Mediterranean basin. We focused on the transition between the penultimate glacial (MIS 6) and the last interglacial (MIS 5), between approximately 130 and 115 kyr BP. A novel approach is proposed, taking into account centennial-scale geochemical data on major elements, selected trace elements, and yttrium and R…

The Anti-Samaritan Attitude as Reflected in Rabbinic Midrashim

2021

Samaritans, as a group within the ranges of ancient ‘Judaisms’, are often mentioned in Talmud and Midrash. As comparable social–religious entities, they are regarded ambivalently by the rabbis. First, they were viewed as Jews, but from the end of the Tannaitic times, and especially after the Bar Kokhba revolt, they were perceived as non-Jews, not reliable about different fields of Halakhic concern. Rabbinic writings reflect on this change in attitude and describe a long ongoing conflict and a growing anti-Samaritan attitude. This article analyzes several dialogues between rabbis and Samaritans transmitted in the Midrash on the book of Genesis, Bereshit Rabbah. In four larger sections, the f…

HemoKinect: A Microsoft Kinect V2 Based Exergaming Software to Supervise Physical Exercise of Patients with Hemophilia

2018

Patients with hemophilia need to strictly follow exercise routines to minimize their risk of suffering bleeding in joints, known as hemarthrosis. This paper introduces and validates a new exergaming software tool called HemoKinect that intends to keep track of exercises using Microsoft Kinect V2&rsquo

The Ba2LnFeNb4O15 “tetragonal tungsten bronze”: Towards RT composite multiferroics

2009

Several Niobium oxides of formula Ba2LnFeNb4O15 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd) with the Tetragonal Tungsten Bronze (TTB) structure have been synthesised by conventional solid-state methods. The Neodymium, Samarium and Europium compounds are ferroelectric with Curie temperature ranging from 320 to 440K. The Praseodymium and Gadolinium compounds behave as relaxors below 170 and 300 K respectively. The Praseodymium, Neodymium, Samarium, Europium and Gadolinium compounds exhibit magnetic hysteresis loops at room temperature originating from traces of a barium ferrite secondary phase. The presence of both ferroelectric and magnetic hysteresis loops at room temperature allows considering these mat…

Preparation of Sm-loaded brookite TiO2 photocatalysts

2011

Abstract Pure and Sm-loaded brookite nanoparticles and thin films were prepared using TiCl4 as precursor of TiO2. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), specific surface area (SSA) determination, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. The photocatalytic activity of the powders was investigated by employing the photodegradation of 4-nitrophenol in a liquid–solid system whilst the photoreactivity of the films was tested by evaluating the rate of degradation of 2-propanol in a gas–solid system. Loading with Sm resulted in a significant improvement of the photoreactivity of brookite and the beneficial effect was attributed to an incre…
