Uptake and photoinduced degradation of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in Ulva lactuca highlight its potential application in environmental bioremediation
2022
Abstract The bioaccumulation of phthalates was studied in fragments of Ulva lactuca exposed for a maximum of 31 days at different concentrations of a solution of six phthalic acid esters (PAEs). The algal matrix showed rapid uptake since the first sampling, which increased over the time of the experimental period, at the end of which seaweed’s bioaccumulation potential was also evaluated. After the uptake, the algal matrix was subjected to UV irradiation in order to verify the removal of the phthalates. PAEs with higher octanol–water partition coefficients (logKow) and molecular weights were preferentially uptaken by U. lactuca in all the exposure experiments. It was observed that both accu…
Essential Oil Composition of Stems and Fruits of Caralluma europaea N.E.Br. (Apocynaceae)
2010
The essential oil of the stems and fruits of Caralluma europaea (Guss.) N.E.Br. (Apocynaceae) from Lampedusa Island has been obtained by hydrodistillation and its composition analyzed. The analyses allowed the identification and quantification of 74 volatile compounds, of which 16 were aromatic and 58 non-aromatic. Stems and fruits contained 1.4% and 2.7% of aromatic compounds respectively, while non-aromatic were 88.3% and 88.8%. Non-aromatic hydrocarbons were the most abundant compounds in both organs, followed by fatty acids. Data showed differences in the profiles between stems and fruits which shared only eighteen compounds; stems accounted for 38 compounds while fruits for 53. Fruits …
Siti Naturali Sacri. Linee Guida per la Gestione delle Aree Protette: Traduzione operativa delle Linee Guida Essenziali della Strategia per i Siti Na…
2012
One of the most salient examples of culture-based environmental conservation is provided by Sacred Natural Sites. Event hough they have had and still have a fundamental role for the conservation of certain areas they are often threatened or undervalued even when included in protected areas. These Guidelines aim at providing to help and support to protected areas managers.

Milano Parco Sud: L'Energia della Memoria
2007
Impact of Heavy Metals in Eggs and Tissues of C. caretta along the Sicilian Coast (Mediterranean Sea)
2022
In this study we compared the heavy metal concentration found in different tissues and eggs of the loggerhead sea turtle and evaluated the potential ecotoxicological risk for this important species. Eighteen heavy metal elements were determined in different tissues (liver, gonads, fat, kidney, heart, brain, and spleen) of nine individuals of Caretta caretta found stranded along the coasts of Messina (Sicily, Italy) and in the shell and yolk of six eggs from the island of Linosa (Sicily, Italy). For the analysis of the heavy metals, we used the analytical procedures in accordance with the EPA 200.8 method supplemented by EPA 6020b with three replicates for each measurement. The elements anal…
Edible Insects an Alternative Nutritional Source of Bioactive Compounds: A Review
2023
Edible insects have the potential to become one of the major future foods. In fact, they can be considered cheap, highly nutritious, and healthy food sources. International agencies, such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), have focused their attention on the consumption of edible insects, in particular, regarding their nutritional value and possible biological, toxicological, and allergenic risks, wishing the development of analytical methods to verify the authenticity, quality, and safety of insect-based products. Edible insects are rich in proteins, fats, fiber, vitamins, and minerals but also seem to contain large amounts of polyphenols able to have a key role in specific bi…
Aldehydes measurements in public indoor environments in Palermo (Italy) using voltammetry.
2012
Studies on indoor air quality are important since people spend more than 80% of life in confined environments, thus it is necessary to evaluate indoor contaminant concentrations and distributions for assessing total human exposure to them (Mannino and Orecchio, 2008; Orecchio, 2011). Aldehydes are indoor and outdoor chemical pollutants of particular interest due to their potential impact on health. Formaldehyde is usually the most abundant aldehyde in air and also the most studied since it is classified as human carcinogen. It is well known that formaldehyde is directly emitted from building materials, wood combustion, cigarette smoking, and is used as a bactericidal agent. One purpose of t…
