Forecasting correlated time series with exponential smoothing models

2011

Abstract This paper presents the Bayesian analysis of a general multivariate exponential smoothing model that allows us to forecast time series jointly, subject to correlated random disturbances. The general multivariate model, which can be formulated as a seemingly unrelated regression model, includes the previously studied homogeneous multivariate Holt-Winters’ model as a special case when all of the univariate series share a common structure. MCMC simulation techniques are required in order to approach the non-analytically tractable posterior distribution of the model parameters. The predictive distribution is then estimated using Monte Carlo integration. A Bayesian model selection crite…

Welfare, Home Market Effects, and Horizontal Foreign Direct Investment

2005

We investigate the spatial distribution and organization of an imperfectly competitive industry when firms may choose to operate more than a single production unit. Focusing on a short-run setting with a fixed mass of firms, we fully characterize the spatial equilibria analytically. Comparing the equilibrium and the first-best, we show that both organizational and spatial inefficiencies may arise. In particular, when fixed costs are low enough the market outcome may well lead to overinvestment and, therefore, to too many multinationals operating from a social point of view. Furthermore, once multinationals are taken into account, the market outcome may well lead too little agglomeration.

In-beam study of the 128, 130Xe nuclei

1981

Abstract The level structure of 128,130Xe has been studied in the (α, 2nγ) and (3He, 3nγ) reactions on enriched Te targets using in-beam γ-ray spectroscopic methods. For both nuclei the existing information about positive-parity level structure was enriched and many new negative-parity two-quasiparticle states were observed. Isomeric states with the half-lives of 63 ± 12 ns in 128 Xe and 4.8 ± 0.5 ns in 130 Xe were found. For collective positive-parity states the interacting boson model, and calculations based on Bohr hamiltonian were compared with the experimental data.

Prior mathematics achievement, cognitive appraisals and anxiety as predictors of Finnish students’ later mathematics performance and career orientati…

2010

The aim of this two‐year longitudinal study was to investigate the role and impact of prior mathematics performance, cognitive appraisals and mathematics‐specific, affective anxiety in determining later mathematics achievement and future career orientation among Finnish adolescents. The basic ideas of the control‐value theory, assumed to be culturally universal, and previous controversial results regarding the relationship between mathematics anxiety and mathematics achievement were tested in the Finnish cultural context with a longitudinal design. The key premise of the control‐value theory is that control and value appraisals are significant determinants of both activity and outcome achie…

Rotationally symmetric p -harmonic maps fromD2toS2

2013

We consider rotationally symmetric p-harmonic maps from the unit disk D2⊂R2 to the unit sphere S2⊂R3, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions and with 1<p<∞. We show that the associated energy functional admits a unique minimizer which is of class C∞ in the interior and C1 up to the boundary. We also show that there exist infinitely many global solutions to the associated Euler–Lagrange equation and we completely characterize them.

High resolution study of the 3ν1 band of SO2

2009

Abstract The second overtone band 3 ν 1 of sulfur dioxide has been studied for the first time with high resolution rotation-vibration spectroscopy. About 3000 transitions involving about 900 upper state energy levels with J max. = 66 and K a max. = 24 have been assigned to the 3 ν 1 band. In the analysis, an effective Hamiltonian taking into account accidental interactions between the vibrational states (3 0 0), (2 2 0), and (0 4 1) was used. The Watson operator in A -reduction and I r representation was used in the diagonal blocks of the Hamiltonian. As the result of analysis a set of parameters reproducing the initial experimental data with the rms = 0.00028 cm −1 was obtained.

A Domain Imbedding Method with Distributed Lagrange Multipliers for Acoustic Scattering Problems

2003

The numerical computation of acoustic scattering by bounded twodimensional obstacles is considered. A domain imbedding method with Lagrange multipliers is introduced for the solution of the Helmholtz equation with a second-order absorbing boundary condition. Distributed Lagrange multipliers are used to enforce the Dirichlet boundary condition on the scatterer. The saddle-point problem arising from the conforming finite element discretization is iteratively solved by the GMRES method with a block triangular preconditioner. Numerical experiments are performed with a disc and a semi-open cavity as scatterers.

Design of an FBG based-on sensor device for large displacement deformation

2013

This article deals with the modeling of a strain-displacement transducer conceived for extending the FBG measurement range. The intrinsic fragility of the optical fiber limits their application to cases characterized by relatively small deformations. To extend the employ to the large displacement field (i.e. morphing applications), a dedicated device was conceived, constituted by a circular ring connected to the structure and laterally integrated with a FBG sensor. This device was mathematically modeled minimizing the potential energy this way arriving at a description of the displacement and deformation field along the curvilinear abscissa. The theoretical predictions were then validated t…
