Autism is a prenatal disorder: Evidence from late gestation brain overgrowth

2018

This retrospective study aimed to specify the critical period for atypical brain development in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using prenatal and postnatal head growth parameters. The sample consisted of 80 Caucasian, unrelated, idiopathic patients with ASD born after 1995. Fetal ultrasound parameters (head circumference [HC], abdominal circumference, and femur length) were obtained during the second and third trimesters of gestation. HC at birth and postnatal parameters at 12 and 24 months of age were also collected. Head overgrowth, assessed by HC, was highlighted during the second (20-26 weeks of amenorrhea) and third (28-36 weeks of amenorrhea) trimesters. Normal growth…

Menstrual dysfunction and body weight dissatisfaction among Finnish young athletes and non-athletes.

2020

To determine the prevalence of menstrual dysfunction (MD; i.e. oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea) and attitudes towards body weight among athletes and non‐athletes, we studied a cohort of athletes and non‐athletes, in adolescence (14–16 years) and subsequently in young adulthood (18–20 years). We further studied the differences between athletes reporting MD and eumenorrheic athletes at both time periods and identified physical and behavioural characteristicsthat might predict MD in young adulthood. Data were collected using questionnaires, accelerometers, and a pre‐participation screening. In adolescence, the athletes reported current primary amenorrhea more often than the non‐athletes (4.7% vs.…

Does Preoperative Treatment with a Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone Agonist Improve the Outcome of Endometrial Resection?

1998

Abstract Study Objective. To verify if more favorable long-term results of endometrial resection can be obtained with preoperative gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist treatment. Design. Multicenter, randomized, controlled trial (Canadian Task Force classification I). Setting. Tertiary care academic department. Patients. Sixty-three premenopausal women with established menorrhagia. Intervention. Eight weeks of goserelin depot treatment before endometrial resection or immediate surgery in the early proliferative phase of the cycle. Measurements and Main Results. Variations in menstrual patterns and bleeding scores as well as overall degree of satisfaction with treatment were determi…

Increased anti-Mullerian hormone levels and ovarian size in a subgroup of women with functional hypothalamic amenorrhea: further identification of th…

2016

Functional hypothalamic amenorrhea is a disorder characterized by cessation of menstrual cycles in the absence of organic disease. In most patients, it occurs in adult life after a stressful event and may be related to a condition of mild chronic energy deprivation. The endocrine pattern is characterized by low estrogen levels with an absent response to a progestogen challenge test and low-normal gonadotropin levels. A few studies have shown that some of these women may have some features of polycystic ovary syndrome; these features include an increased androgen response to gonadotropins, increased anti-Mullerian hormone levels, and altered ovarian morphology or increased ovarian size. Thes…

2017

Since features of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have been found to be prevalent in women with functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA), we wished to determine what happens to these features after recovery of menstrual function in FHA Design: Prospective cohort study. Twenty-eight women with FHA and 30 age-matched ovulatory controls were studied.Twenty-eight women with FHA and 30 age-matched ovulatory controls were studied. We measured serum estradiol, LH, FSH, testosterone, DHEAS, anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), body mass index, and ovarian morphology on transvaginal ultrasound. At baseline, 12 of the 28 women (43%) had increased AMH (4.7 ng/mL), and higher testosterone and larger ovaries c…

Bone Mineral Density and Long Term Exercise

1993

Evidence in human studies of the association of long term habitual exercise with bone mineral content (BMC) and density (BMD) largely comes from studies in athletes. In young adults, the highest BMC and BMD values have been found in strength and power-trained athletes, while endurance activities such as long distance running and swimming seem less effective with regard to peak bone density. Intensive endurance training may even be associated with amenorrhoea and decreased trabecular bone density in young females. However, after menopause female athletes show greater bone mass indicating that they do not share the accelerated decline in BMC observed in a nonathletic population. Middle-aged a…

Vesico-uterine fistula treated by amenorrhoea induced with contraceptive steroids. Two case reports.

1980

2 case reports of women with vesico-uterine fistulae who were successfully treated by inducing amenorrhea by the continuous administration of an estrogen-progestogen compound for 6 months are presented. Ortho-Novum 1/50 was used. The amenorrheic condition induced by continuous ingestion of an oral contraceptive agent allowed the fistula time to heal since fistulae rarely close spontaneously because of fluids flowing fhrough them inhibiting the healing process. This method of management should be tried before surgery the generally recommended treatment.

Increased DHEAs levels in PCO syndrome: evidence for the existence of two subgroups of patients

1986

In 49 patients affected by PCO syndrome the serum levels of dehydroepiandroster-one-sulphate (DHEAs) were determined and correlated with the cfinical presentation and the endocrine pattern. Twenty-three patients (47%) had high DHEAs levels (h-DHEAs patients). They presented a milder clinical presentation (low incidence of amenorrhea) than PCO patients with normal DHEAs levels (n-DHEAs patients). In h-DHEAs patients the finding of a normal DHEAs. response to ACTH and of slightly increased 17OHP serum levels suggested that the elevation of serum DHEAs was not due to an adrenal enzymatic deficiency but to a tonic hyperstimulation of the adrenals. Two subgroups of h-DHEAs patients were identifi…

Inverse correlation between baseline inhibin B and FSH after stimulation with GnRH: a study of serum levels of inhibin A and B, pro alpha-C and activ…

2000

OBJECTIVE: Interest has focused recently on the influences of the polypeptide factors inhibin and activin on the selective regulation of the pituitary secretion of gonadotropins. DESIGN: Measurement of the concentrations of inhibin-related proteins in relation to the changes in pituitary gonadotropin (FSH, LH) parameters, after GnRH stimulation with a bolus injection of 100 microg gonadorelin, in 19 women with ovulatory disturbances. METHODS: Serum levels of inhibin A and B, activin A, and pro alpha-C were measured using sensitive ELISA kits. RESULTS: Within 60 min after GnRH stimulation, FSH values doubled from 5 to 10 mU/ml (P < 0.001). LH increased 12-fold from 2 to 24 mU/ml (P < 0…

Design Randomized clinical study. Healthy volunteers in an academic research environment. Setting Academic teaching hospital. Patient(s) Premenopausal women with abnormal uterine bleeding. Intervention(s) Fifty-eight patients were treated with the ELITT procedure and 58 patients with TCRE; both groups were treated with GnRH agonists before the procedure. Main outcome measure(s) Bleeding status and patient satis…
