Davide e Golia. Giuseppe Antonio Borgese e la traiettoria americanista di un esule antifascista
2019
Giuseppe Antonio Borgese was one of the anti-fascist intellectuals who, around the Thirties of the XX Century, let themselves be involved by the American myth. Although inspired by democratic ideals mixed with a profound sense of Risorgimento and libertarian patriotism, he was near the nationalist and interventionist ideology. The decisive turning point in Borgese's life took place during the years in which the dictatorship and the regime of censorship imposed by Fascism, became ever more alive and dominant, causing him to develop the idea of leaving Italy for the United States. Beyond the contradictories relationships that bound him to the two Countries, Borgese, unable to recognize his ho…

Financing public higher education in developing countries : the potential role of loan schemes
1986
The financing of education has emerged as a major topic of discussion among policy makers in recent years. There is evidence that in many developing countries, governments can no longer continue to increase spending on education at the high rates characteristic in the 1960s and 1970s. The macroeconomic environment has worsened, and there is keen intersectoral competition for public funds. Thus unless educational development moves away from its present heavy dependence on public funds, the expansion of education would be frustrated. One policy option is to increase the private financing of education. In this paper, we evaluate the potential effectiveness of loans schemes as a cost recovery i…
Regional and global contributions of air pollution to risk of death from COVID-19
2020
Abstract Aims The risk of mortality from the coronavirus disease that emerged in 2019 (COVID-19) is increased by comorbidity from cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. Air pollution also causes excess mortality from these conditions. Analysis of the first severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-1) outcomes in 2003, and preliminary investigations of those for SARS-CoV-2 since 2019, provide evidence that the incidence and severity are related to ambient air pollution. We estimated the fraction of COVID-19 mortality that is attributable to the long-term exposure to ambient fine particulate air pollution. Methods and results We characterized global exposure to fine particulates…
Hospitalisation and length of hospital stay following first-episode psychosis:Systematic review and meta-analysis of longitudinal studies
2019
AbstractBackgroundReducing hospitalisation and length of stay (LOS) in hospital following first episode psychosis (FEP) is important, yet reliable measures of these outcomes and their moderators are lacking. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the proportion of FEP cases who were hospitalised after their first contact with services and the LOS in a hospital during follow-up.MethodsStudies were identified from a systematic search across major electronic databases from inception to October 2017. Random effects meta-analyses and meta-regression analyses were conducted.Results81 longitudinal studies encompassing data for 23 280 FEP patients with an average follow-u…
Anti-inflammatory Effects of South American Tanacetum vulgare
1998
Abstract In recent years the role of phenolic compounds and sesquiterpene lactones, particularly parthenolide, in the anti-migraine and anti-inflammatory effects of Tanacetum parthenium (Asteraceae) has attracted much attention. However, the closely-related cosmopolitan species T. vulgare has remained outside the mainstream of research in this field. After treating the aerial parts of T. vulgare with dichloromethane and methanol, and applying conventional column and thin-layer chromatographic techniques, it was possible to isolate from the moderately lipophilic fractions the principles responsible for the anti-inflammatory activity of this plant against the mouse-ear oedema induced by 12-O-…
Investigating Limits in Exploiting Assembled Landslide Inventories for Calibrating Regional Susceptibility Models: A Test in Volcanic Areas of El Sal…
2022
This research is focused on the evaluation of the reliability of regional landslide susceptibility models obtained by exploiting inhomogeneous (for quality, resolution and/or triggering related type and intensity) collected inventories for calibration. At a large-scale glance, merging more inventories can result in well-performing models hiding potential strong predictive deficiencies. An example of the limits that such kinds of models can display is given by a landslide susceptibility study, which was carried out for a large sector of the coastal area of El Salvador, where an apparently well-performing regional model (AUC = 0.87) was obtained by regressing a dataset through multivariate ad…

New York City, la più grande città del cibo italiano
2021
This work offers an analysis of Italian restaurants in New York City. Historical literature and anthropological has repeatedly highlighted the role that Italian emigration to the east coast plays of the United States and the spread of gastronomic clothes marked as Italian in foreign territory they had in the construction of a tricolor gastronomic effigy (in part. Montanari 2010; Cinotto 2001; Cecla 1998). This interdependence strengthens the relationship from a semiotic perspective with otherness as an indispensable condition for building an indigenous food identity and food stereotypies recognized as "typical". Tricolor food symbols such as pasta and pizza owe their nationalization, for th…
