Extraction of uranyl ions from aqueous solutions using silica-gel-bound macrocycles for alpha contaminated waste water treatment

Abstract The efficiency for the extraction of U(VI) of new modified silica gels, namely N-tripropionate (or N-triacetate)-substituted tetraazamacrocycles-bound silica gels, has been studied. The effect of the nature of the ligand, the pH and the temperature was studied both in batch experiments as well as in continuous extraction. These silica gels are good candidates for the extraction of U(VI) when compared to a commercially available acid-type chelating resin. The breakthrough and regeneration tests showed that the total removal of U(VI) from a contaminated solution can be achieved by using a column packed with such tetraazamacrocycles-bound silica gels. Fast volatilization of some lanthanide and actinide elements from titanium surfaces

The ad- and desorption of trace quantities of the lanthanide elements lanthanum, praseodymium, neodymium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, dysprosium, and ytterbium and of the actinide elements americium and curium were investigated by thermochromatographic and isothermal measurements with hot titanium columns. The adsorption enthalpies deduced from the experimental data are in reasonable agreement with calculated values which indicate considerable variations in volatility under such conditions. More volatile elements can quickly be separated from less volatile elements by heating the mixture on titanium in high vacuum.
Dendrimer-coated magnetic particles for radionuclide separation

Magnetic particles were synthesised for radionuclide removal from nuclear wastes by magnetic separation. Dendrimers with terminal amino groups attached to the particle surface were used to bind chelating groups for lanthanides and actinides. This led to a 50–400-fold increase of the distribution coefficients for europium and americium in comparison to the reference particles without the dendrimers. Back-extraction studies have demonstrated the possibility of multiple particle recycling.

Fission fragment anisotropy for the 242mAm fission isomer by spin exchange pumping with polarized rubidium vapour

Abstract The foundations of an experiment have been worked out with which, in principle, the spin, hyperfine constants and the isomer shift of the 14 ms fission isomer 242mAm can be measured. Such an experiment would be based on the fission fragment anisotropy signal which has actually been observed in this work after spin exchange pumping with polarized rubidium vapour in an optical buffer gas cell. A decrease of the count rate of (12±4)% has been measured at 90% with respect to the quantization axis. Depth profiling of Pu, 241Am and 137Cs in soils from southern Belarus measured by ICP-MS and alpha- and gamma-spectrometry

The depth distribution of plutonium, americium, and Cs-137 originating front the 1986 accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) was investigated in several soil profiles in the vicinity from Belarus. The vertical migration of transuranic elements in soils typical of the 30 km relocation area around Chernobyl NPP was studied using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), alpha spectrometry, and gamma spectrometry. Transuranic concentrations in upper soil layers ranged from 6 x 10(-12) g g(-1) to 6 x 10(-10) g g(-1) for plutonium and from 1.8 x 10(-13) g g(-1) to 1.6 x 10(-11) g g(-1) for americium.
