Outcome of enzyme replacement therapy in patients with Gaucher disease type I. The Romanian experience

This study reports the first evaluation of therapeutic response in Romanian patients with Gaucher disease type I, after therapy with Cerezyme recently became available in our country.24 patients (11-50 years) received Cerezyme 20-60 U/kg every two weeks for at least 18 months. Haemoglobin, platelet count, volume of the liver and spleen, plasma chitotriosidase and the severity score were assessed every 6 months; skeletal radiography and osteodensitometry were also monitored.Eleven patients were splenectomized before start of therapy. Differentiation of Penicillium griseofulvum Dierckx isolates by enzyme assays and by patulin and griseofulvin analyses

The production of patulin and griseofulvin by 49 different isolates of Penicillium griseofulvum Dierckx was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Eleven isolates were obtained from pistachio nuts, 37 were obtained from wheat seeds, and 1 was obtained from the American Type Culture Collection. Activities of 19 enzymes were also assayed by the API ZYM system. From these results it may be deduced that there are two different groups among the strains tested which cannot be distinguished by morphological and cultural characteristics. The effect of dietary phosphorus deficiency on the immune responses of European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L.)

Low phosphorous (P) feeds in aquaculture are recommended to reduce eutrophication of water systems. However, the feed should be adequate for normal growth and intact immune defence. Influence of low dietary P supply on non-specific and specific immune defence of European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) was studied in two trials. Protein-Based Nanoparticles for the Delivery of Enzymes with Antibacterial Activity.

Proteins represent a versatile biopolymer material for the preparation of nanoparticles due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low immunogenicity. This study presents a protein-based nanoparticle system consisting of high surface PEGylated lysozyme polyethylene glycol-modified lysozyme (LYZmPEG ). This protein modification leads to a solubility switch, which allows a nanoparticle preparation using a mild double emulsion method without the need of surfactants. The method allows the encapsulation of large hydrophilic payloads inside of the protein-based nanoparticle system. Non-fouling TiO2 surfaces are attractive for a wide range of applications such as biosensors and medical devices, where biologically inert surfaces are needed. Typically, this is achieved by controlled surface modifications which prevent protein adsorption. For example, polyethylene glycol (PEG) or PEG-derived polymers have been widely applied to render TiO2 surfaces biologically inert. The main objective of our study is to develop a simple, fast and reliable method for measuring ß-glucocerebrosidase activity in Gaucher patients leukocytes in clinical practice. This measurement may be a useful marker to drive dose selection and early clinical decision making of enzyme replacement therapy. In thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO), evidence for lacrimal gland involvement with altered composition of tears has been reported.
