ENTE REGIONALE PER IL DIRITTO ALLO STUDIO (ERSU): MENSE GOURMET?

2015

3'-Untranslated regions of oxidative phosphorylation mRNAs function in vivo, as enhancers of translation

2000

Recent findings have indicated that the 3´-untranslated region (3´-UTR) of the mRNA encoding the β-catalytic subunit of the mitochondrial H+-ATP synthase has an in vitro translation-enhancing activity (TEA) [Izquierdo and Cuezva, Mol. Cell. Biol. (1997) 17, 5255–5268; Izquierdo and Cuezva, Biochem. J. (2000) 346, 849–855]. In the present work, we have expressed chimaeric plasmids that encode mRNA variants of green fluorescent protein in normal rat kidney and liver clone 9 cells to determine whether the 3´-UTRs of nuclear-encoded mRNAs involved in the biogenesis of mitochondria have an intrinsic TEA. TEA is found in the 3´-UTR of the mRNAs encoding the α- and β-subunits of the rat H+-ATP syn…

Laparoscopic lymph node dissection should be performed before fertility preserving treatment of patients with cervical cancer

2012

Objective: The aim of this study is to assess our results of treatment of women with stage I cervical cancer > 2 cm in diameter seeking fertility preservation. Treatment consisted of Laparoscopic Pelvic and Paraaortic Lymphadenectomy (LPPLND), and when no nodal metastasis was detected, neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) followed by radical vaginal trachelectomy (RVT). Patients with positive lymph nodes underwent primary chemoradiation. Methods: A cohort of women younger than 40 years of age with stage I disease > 2 cm who underwent LPPLND and either NACT and RVT or chemoradiation. Oncological outcome was evaluated prospectively. Results: Eighteen women were eligible for this study. Twelve (67%…

Dual emission and excited-state mixed-valence in a quasi-symmetric dinuclear Ru-Ru complex.

2014

The synthesis and characterization of the new dinuclear dipeptide [(EtOOC-tpy)Ru(tpy-NHCO-tpy)Ru(tpy-NHCOCH3)](4+) 3(4+) of the bis(terpyridine)ruthenium amino acid [(HOOC-tpy)Ru(tpy-NH2)](2+) 1(2+) are described, and the properties of the dipeptide are compared to those of the mononuclear complex [(EtOOC-tpy)Ru(tpy-NHCOCH3)](2+) 4(2+) carrying the same functional groups. 3(4+) is designed to serve a high electronic similarity of the two ruthenium sites despite the intrinsic asymmetry arising from the amide bridge. This is confirmed via UV-vis absorption and NMR spectroscopy as well as cyclic voltammetry. 4(2+) and 3(4+) are emissive at room temperature, as expected. Moreover, 3(4+) exhibit…

Structure of N,4-dinitroaniline and its complex with sulfolane at 85 K; on the proton donor–acceptor affinity of the primary nitramine (HNNO2) group

2001

The NNO2 group of the title compound is significantly less twisted with respect to the aromatic ring in comparison to a typical secondary nitramine. The amide nitrogen is trigonally hybridized. The nitramino group is almost planar. The C—C—N—N torsion angles vary between ca 13 and 42°, whereas the twist along the N—N bond is much smaller and amounts to between ca 1 and 15°. Those twist angles are governed by a crystal packing and are much larger in the case of crystals of pure N,4-dinitroaniline in comparison to that of its complex with sulfolane. The deviations of the internal angles of the aromatic ring from 120° do not exceed 3°. The presence of the nitro group increases the C—C—C valenc…

Study of the column efficiency using gradient elution based on Van Deemter plots.

2018

Performance of chromatographic columns is of major importance in the development of more efficient separation methods. So far, a common practice is to study the column behavior in isocratic elution by modifying the flow rate and fitting the theoretical plate height values versus the mobile phase linear velocity, according to the Van Deemter equation. In this work, an approach is presented to extend the measurement of efficiency to linear gradient elution, where the mean retention factor is kept constant at each assayed flow. This avoids a possible source of uncertainty due to the change in the distribution equilibria profile, and makes the mean interactions with the stationary phase in grad…

Simultaneous optimization of mobile phase composition, column nature and length to analyse complex samples using serially coupled columns

2013

Abstract The combination of the selectivity of different columns serially coupled improves the separation expectancies with regard to the separation offered by each single column. In the reported approaches, either a pre-selected isocratic mobile phase composition or gradient program, giving rise to acceptable retention, is used. In previous work (JCA 1281 (2013) 94), we showed that the approach succeeds with conventional columns, assembled through zero-dead volume couplers. In this work, the simultaneous interpretive optimization of mobile phase composition and column nature and length, based on a limited number of experimental data, is demonstrated. This approach allows an impressive redu…

(Vapour + liquid) equilibria of (water + dimethylformamide): application of the headspace-gas chromatography for the determination of thermodynamic i…

1998

Abstract Isothermal measurements of the partial vapour pressures have been carried out on {water + dimethylformamide (DMF)} at temperatures betweenT=305.15 K andT=323.15 K using an apparatus composed of a headspace sampler and a normal gas chromatograph. These data were simultaneously evaluated in one step with respect to the (composition dependent, integral) Flory-Huggins interaction parametergby means of a new method which minimizes the Gibbs energy of mixing and does not require chemical potentials. The expression forggiven by Koningsveld and Kleintjens, originally designed for polymer solutions, describes the present results best.

Reactive oxygen species activation of MAPK pathway results in VEGF upregulation as an undesired irradiation response

2013

Background Radioresistance limits the effectiveness of radiotherapy in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. We previously demonstrated post-radiogenic mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway activation and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) release resulting in reduced tumor cell response. Here, we examined the association of this mechanism with the induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) under irradiation (IR). Methods Intracellular ROS after IR were measured. We modeled radiation-induced ROS by exposure of two SCC lines to H2O2 and evaluated the impact of irradiation and ROS on ERK phosphorylation by Western blot, immunohistochemistry, and ELISA. Results We found eleva…

Comparative study assessing effects of sonic hedgehog and VEGF in a human co-culture model for bone vascularisation strategies.

2011

The morphogen sonic hedgehog (Shh) seems to mediate adult repair processes in bone regeneration and vascularisation. In this study we investigated the effects of Shh on co-cultures consisting of human primary osteoblasts and outgrowth endothelial cells in terms of angiogenic activation and vessel maturation in comparison to the treatment with the commonly used proangiogenic factor, VEGF. Both, stimulation with VEGF or Shh, leads to an increase in the formation of microvessel-like structures compared to untreated controls. In contrast to VEGF, proangiogenic effects by Shh could already be observed after 24 h of treatment. Nevertheless, after 14 days the angiogenic activity of OEC was compara…
