Background: Allergic contact sensitization to ‘para amino’ compounds is frequent and the spectrum of cross-reactivity between members of this chemical group is variable. Methods: A retrospective analysis of clinical patch test data obtained with a special test series in the centres of the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology (IVDK) between 1995 and 1999. Sulpiride (SULP), a substituted benzamide with high selectivity for D 2 -like dopamine receptors, has a chiral structure and is used in most countries as the racemate. In an open pilot study, we investigated 26 inpatients (13 female, 13 male) with schizophrenic or depressive disorder treated with SULP (mean daily dosage 64-1062 mg) administered orally, either as a monotherapy or as an add-on treatment to a stable and unchanged medication for 3-60 days. Objective— The effects of combined expression of human hepatic lipase (HL) and human apolipoprotein B (apoB) on low-density lipoprotein (LDL) subclasses were examined in rabbits, a species naturally deficient in HL activity. Methods and Results— In apoB-transgenic rabbit plasma, >80% of the protein was found in the 1.006- to 1.050-g/mL fraction. Gradient gel electrophoresis (GGE) of this fraction revealed two distinct species, designated large and small LDL. We describe a patient with the biochemically established combination of Farber and Sandhoff disease. A 6-month-old girl of consanguineous Turkish parents presented with hoarseness, stridor, scattered skin nodules, painful swelling of hand joints and ankles, and cherry-red macular spots. Until the age of 2 years her motor and physical condition deteriorated distinctly, however her mental state remained unchanged. A biopsied skin nodule disclosed lysosomal inclusions within storage cells that were typical of Farber disease (curved tubular structures). Abstract RIC followed by allo-SCT is an effective salvage treatment for some relapsed hematologic malignancies due to the postulated graft versus tumour (GVT) effect. In order to evaluate the quality of the clinical response, we have investigated the molecular status of patients receiving allo-SCT for relapsed disease. Forty-four patients (19 chronic lymphocytic leukemias (CLL), 21 follicular lymphomas (FCL) and 4 small lymphocytic lymphomas (SLL)) were enrolled in a prospective phase II study. In a first study (1986 to 1992) the German Relapsing ALL Study Group (GRALLSG) has treated 67 adult patients with a first relapse of ALL. A first phase of induction consisted of vindesine, daunorubicin, asparaginase, and prednisone, a second phase of high-dose cytosine-arabinoside (Hd ara-C) and VP16. Results: 45 CR, 2 PR, 13 failures, 7 early death. 25 patients received a BMT. 10 had an allogeneic BMT in CR, 5 after another relapse or with refractory disease. Of 10 with autologous BMT 8 have been in 2nd CR. Many alternatives exist for treating hirsutism. Based on an analysis of scientific literature and on the experiences of the author, the most common anti-androgen agents are discussed in this review. Androgen receptor blockers (cyproterone acetate, flutamide and spironolactone), 5 alpha-reductase inhibitors (finasteride) and androgen-suppressing agents (gonadotrophin-releasing hormone [GnRH] agonists, oestroprogestins, corticosteroids and insulin-sensitising agents) are evaluated and compared. The importance of diagnosis in choosing the most appropriate anti-androgen treatment is also discussed.
