Characterisation of humic substances by acid catalysed transesterification

2002

Abstract The chemical composition of low molecular weight moieties linked to the core structures of humic substances (HS) are of substantial importance for the understanding of the chemical structures and mode of interactions of HS with other substances in the environment. In this study a novel approach to characterise certain low molecular weight compounds bound to HS is suggested. The method includes transesterification (TE) of ester and amide bound structures, and esterification (E) of free carboxylic groups using acid catalysed methanolysis followed by gas chromatography (GC)–mass spectrometry (MS) and GC-FID analysis. Methanolysis of five HS of different origin, demonstrated the presen…

Shear Induced Demixing and Rheological Behavior of Aqueous Solutions of Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)

2003

The interrelation between the phase separation behavior and the rheological performance of aqueous solutions of high molecular weight (M w = 1 600 kg/mol) poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) was investigated. The system demixes upon heating and the cloud point temperature, T cp decreases steadily with rising polymer concentration up to 10 wt.-%. The application of shear supports phase separation and reduces T cp markedly. This observation is interpreted in terms of destruction of intersegmental clusters formed in the quiescent state owing to favorable interactions. Intrinsic viscosities and Huggins coefficients as well as the viscosities, η at higher polymer concentrations are closely connected wit…

Coordination properties of the ACE inhibitor captopril towards Me2Sn(IV)2+ in aqueous solution, and biological aspects of some dialkyltin(IV) derivat…

2003

Abstract The coordination of Me 2 Sn(IV) 2+ (M) to captopril { N -[( S )-3-mercapto-2-methylpropionyl]- l -proline, H 2 (cap), H 2 L} in aqueous solution was studied by means of potentiometric titration, electrospray mass spectrometry, 1 H-NMR spectroscopy and Mossbauer spectroscopy in the pH range 2–11 ( I =0.1 mol dm −3 NaClO 4 , 298 K). The results obtained with these methods proved that only monomeric complexes are formed in solution. In the acidic pH range, species with a metal-to-ligand ratio of 1:1 exist. The neutral complex ML, similarly to the complex Me 2 Sn(cap) crystallized in the same pH range, adopts a tbp structure with eq S − and ax COO − , while, instead of the coordina…

Oxamidato complexes. Part 4. Electrochemical study of the copper(III)/copper(II) couple in monomeric N,N?-bis(substituent)oxamidatocopper(II) complex…

1993

The electrochemical behaviour of a series of monomeric N,N′-bis(substituent)oxamidato copper(II) complexes of formula Na2[Cu(3,5,3′,5′-X4obbz)]·4H2O [X = Cl (1), Br (2), I (3) and obbz = oxamidobis(benzoato)], Na2-[Cu(obbz)]·4H2O (4), Na2[Cu(5,5′-Me2obbz)]·4H2O (5), Na2[Cu(4,5,4,5′-(MeO)4obbz)]·4H2O(6),Na2[Cu(obp)]· 3.5H2O (7) (obp = oxamidobis(propionato)) and Na2[Cu(pba)]·6H2O (8), [pba = propylenebis(oxamate)] has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry, rotating disk electrode and coulometry in water and dimethylsulphoxide (dmso) solutions. NaNO3 (0.1 M) and n-Bu4NPF6 (0.1 M) were used as supporting electrolytes in H2O and dmso respectively, all solutions being thermostatted at 25 °C. I…

New Self-Assembling Polyaspartamide-Based Brush Copolymers Obtained by Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

2009

A simple and efficient method for the synthesis of polyaspartamide-based brush copolymers using Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) is here presented. The syntheses were performed by using two subsequent steps. In the first step the macroinitiator was obtained by the conjugation of a proper number of 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide (BIB) residues to the R, -poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-D,L-aspartamide (PHEA) side chains, obtaining the PHEA-BIB copolymer. PHEA-BIB copolymer was used as “multi-functional macroinitiator” for the polymerization via ATRP of hydrophilic methacrylic monomers, such as methacrylic acid (MA), obtaining PHEA-IB-poly(MA) copolymer, sodium methacrylate (MANa+), obtaining PH…

Fractionation of unsubstituted cellulose from solutions in either Ni-tren or (N,N-dimethylacetamide + LiCl)

2000

Starting from solutions of unsubstituted cellulose (Avicel PH101, M w = 30.1 kg/mol and M w /M n = 3 or Solucell 500, M w = 230 kg/mol, M w /M n = 2.8) in either Nitren (0.8 M aqueous solution of the dihydroxotris(2-aminoethly)amine nickel(II) complex) or in a mixed solvent DMAc+LiCl (consisting of N,N-dimethylacetamide plus lithium chloride) it was investigated whether the segregation of a second phase caused by the addition of suitable precipitants leads to polymer fractionation. With Ni-tren the long chains accumulate in the precipitate formed upon the addition of sulfuric acid; as the pH falls below 9, the solution is free of cellulose. Nevertheless this route option for fractionation m…

Molecular and Functional Characterisation of Hemocyanin of the Giant African Millipede Archispirostreptus gigas

2013

SummaryIn contrast to other terrestrial arthropods where gaseous O2 that fuels aerobic metabolism diffuses to the tissues in tracheal tubes, and most other metazoans where O2 is transported to tissues by circulating respiratory proteins, the myriapods (millipedes and centipedes) strikingly have tracheal systems as well as circulating hemocyanin (Hc). In order to elucidate the evolutionary origin and biological significance of millipede Hc we report the molecular structure (subunit composition and amino acid sequence) of multimeric (36-mer) Hc from the forest-floor dwelling giant African millipede Archispirostreptus gigas and its allosteric oxygen binding properties under various physico-che…

Effect of nitrogen limitation and nature of the feed upon Oenococcus oeni metabolism and extracellular protein production

2005

Aims:  The aim of the study was to characterize the effect of various nitrogen sources on Oenococcus oeni growth, carbon source utilization, extracellular protease activity and extracellular proteins. More generally, the goal is to understand how nitrogen-based additives might act to enhance malolactic fermentation in wine. Methods and Results:  Five yeast extracts were used. As the amino acid and nitrogen analyses revealed, they were similar in global amino acid composition, except for arginine level. Nevertheless the ratio of amino acids between free/bound, and low/high molecular weight fractions were highly different. One of the yeast extracts led to a significant protease activity in th…

2011

Solid circular dichroism (CD) spectra of the bimetallic chain compounds were reco…

1986

The kinetics of polyamidation was investigated for the reaction of diphenyl terephthalate as activated diester with trimethylhexamethylenediamine (1 : 1 mixture of 2,2,4- and 2,4,4-trimethyl isomers) in dimethyl sulfoxide. The good solubility of the resulting polyamide (Trogamid®(poly(iminoterephthaloylimino-x,y,z-trimethylhexamethylene))) assured a reaction in which all reactants, especially the polyamide, were soluble. The conversion was followed by analysis of the phenol set free and by measuring the number-average degree of polymerization Pn of the polyamide. The reaction obeyed an overall second order with the principle of equal reactivity of functional groups fulfilled for Pn ≿ 16. De…
