Optimal placement of quality sensors in water distribution systems

2019

Water supply infrastructures are crucial for the sustainable existence and development of modern cities [1,2]. Water distribution systems (WDSs) are complex structures formed by many elements designed and erected to transport water of sufficient quality from water sources to consumers. The amount of the above elements, which can reach up to tens of thousands of links and junctions, their frequently wide spatial dispersion and the WDS characteristic of being very dynamic structures make the management of real WDSs a complex problem [3-5]. Moreover, although the main objective is to supply water in the quantity and quality required, other requirements are essential, namely maintaining conditi…

Pattern Dystrophy of the Macula in a Case of Steinert Disease

2013

Introduction: Myotonic dystrophies are typically associated with ocular complications like ptosis, weakness of the ocular muscle and cataracts, but also with less recognized retinal changes. Case Report: A 41-year-old female with type 1 myotonic dystrophy complained of progressive vision loss. Slit lamp examination revealed the presence of typical bilateral polychromatic cataract with posterior subcapsular component. Dilated fundus examination was remarkable for bilateral macular depigmented changes. Multimodal imaging analysis of the macula suggested the presence of a butterfly-shaped pattern dystrophy. &l…

In-Depth Investigation of the Safety of Wooden Shelves Used for Traditional Cheese Ripening

2021

ABSTRACT The main goal of this research was to characterize the bacterial diversity of the wooden boards used for aging traditional Sicilian cheeses and to evaluate whether pathogenic bacteria are associated with these surfaces. Eighteen cheese dairy factories producing three traditional cheese typologies (PDO Pecorino Siciliano, PDO Piacentinu Ennese, and Caciocavallo Palermitano) were selected within the region of Sicily. The wooden shelf surfaces were sampled by a destructive method to detach wood splinters as well as by a nondestructive brushing to collect microbial cells. Scanning electron microscopy showed the presence of almost continuous bacterial formations on the majority of the s…

An ITS-RFLP method to identify black Aspergillus isolates responsible for OTA contamination in grapes and wine

2006

Ochratoxigenic mycobiota in grapes from representative wine regions in Valencia was identified. Black aspergilli were predominant among the different Aspergillus spp. isolated. Restriction digestion analysis of the ITS products was tested as a rapid method to identify isolates of black Aspergillus species from grapes. Restriction endonuclease digestion of the ITS products using the endonucleases HhaI, NlaIII and RsaI, distinguished five types of restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) corresponding to Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus tubingensis, Aspergillus carbonarius and Aspergillus aculeatus species. In addition, a new RFLP type in the A. niger aggregate was identified. The fragme…

Analysis of Contaminants in Beverages

2019

Abstract The main purpose of our researches, in the last years, was to develop reliable methods for the determination of emerging and old contaminants (Pt, Rh, V, Mo, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), etc.), at trace levels, in the solutions obtained from the mineralization or extraction of environmental and food matrices, because, in particular for metals, some of them cannot be readily analyzed using traditional method, for example, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma with mass spectrometry techniques. Few data are available on the evaluations of Pt, Rh, V, and Mo concentrations, in food matrices, because have ever been carried ou…

ACQUISITION OF STUDENT SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY SKILLS: CENTRALISED EXAMINATION RESULTS IN CHEMISTRY

2016

From 2011, the new educational standard in Latvia in the framework of the educational reform on the centralised examination (CE) in chemistry stipulates students to demonstrate the inquiry skills they have mastered. The purpose of this study is to find out the students’ inquiry skills by analysing the CE results in chemistry. This study addresses the following research questions: (a) To what extent are the centralised examination inquiry skills measured according to the standard outcomes? (b) What information on how students have mastered the inquiry skills in chemistry is available from the CE results for the period of 2011-2015? (c) Does measuring the inquiry skills using inquiry-based la…

R-Curve Modelling of Mode I Delamination in Multidirectional Carbon/Epoxy Composite Laminates

2014

In the present work, the mode I delamination behaviour of a quasi-isotropic quasi-homogeneous carbon/epoxy composite laminate with adjacent plies of 0o//45o is studied numerically. To describe the R-curve behaviour observed during crack propagation, a linear-exponential traction-separation law is proposed, where the fracture toughness and the increment in the fracture energy could be considered separately in the model. This model is then implemented in the finite element simulation of the delamination process in the composite laminate. Numerical results indicate that with the incorporation of the fibre bridging effect leads to a well-predicted force-displacement response of the composite la…

Application of cohesive-zone models to delamination behaviour of composite material

2012

International audience; The parameters of cohesive elements have to be chosen correctly in the simulation of composite delamination by finite element method: such as interface strength, interface stiffness and shape of cohesive law. The purpose of this work is to investigate their influence on the accuracy of the results obtained. A three-dimensional cohesive-zone model has been established using Ls-dyna to simulate Double-Cantilever-Beam mode I (DCB) and Edge-Notched-Flexure mode II (ENF) tests. The influence of these parameters of cohesive element on the maximum load and the slope of load-displacement curve have been discussed by comparing experimental and numerical results. Four traction…

A thermodynamically consistent cohesive-frictional interface model for mixed mode delamination

2016

Abstract A new interface constitutive model based on damage mechanics and frictional plasticity is presented. The model is thermodynamically consistent, it is able to accurately reproduce arbitrary mixed mode debonding conditions and it is proved that the separation work is always bounded between the fracture energy in mode I and the fracture energy in mode II. Analytical results are given for proportional loading paths and for two non-proportional loading paths, confirming the correct behavior of the model for complex loading histories. Numerical and analytical solutions are compared for three classical delamination tests and frictional effects on 4ENF are also considered.

Flying Laser Spot Thermography technique for the NDE of Fibre Metal Laminates disbonds

2017

Abstract The present work investigates the features of an active Infrared-NDT Thermography technique derived from a Flying Laser Spot set-up for the analysis of interlaminar disbonds in layered structures in general and Fibre Metal Laminates in particular. The presented technique uses a laser-spot heat source, which moves at a constant speed, raster scanning the object surface. Interlaminar defects parallel to the surfaces act as barriers towards through-the-thickness heat diffusion. This produces some modifications over the surface thermal field which are well identified in the Standard Deviation calculated over a Reference Area following the heat source. The mechanisms leading to such def…
