Analytical strategies for organic food packaging contaminants
2016
In this review, we present current approaches in the analysis of food-packaging contaminants. Gas and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry detection have been widely used in the analysis of some relevant families of these compounds such as primary aromatic amines, bisphenol A, bisphenol A diglycidyl ether and related compounds, UV-ink photoinitiators, perfluorinated compounds, phthalates and non-intentionally added substances. Main applications for sample treatment and different types of food-contact material migration studies have been also discussed. Pressurized Liquid Extraction, Solid-Phase Microextraction, Focused Ultrasound Solid-Liquid Extraction and Quechers have been …

An automatic flow-through system for exploration of the human bioaccessibility of endocrine disrupting compounds from microplastics
2021
This article reports on the first attempt towards investigating the leaching rates in the human gastrointestinal (GI) tract of plastic-borne contaminants that can be ingested accidentally using physiologically relevant body fluids. Oral bioaccessibility under fasted and fed states was determined in dynamic mode exploiting an automatic flow setup. The flow system is able to mimic the fast uptake of the released species from the polymeric matrix by absorption in the human digestive system by the in-line removal of the leached species. Complex GI extractants based on the Unified Bioaccessibility Method (UBM, fasted state) and Versantvoort test (fed-state) were brought through a microplastic-lo…
Leisure time physical activity in individuals with screen-detected type 2 diabetes compared to those with known type 2 diabetes.
2008
Abstract Aims To investigate whether leisure time physical activity (LTPA) characteristics differ between individuals with previously undiagnosed (screen-detected) and those with previously diagnosed (known) type 2 diabetes. Methods A population-based random sample of 1364 (participation rate 61%) men and 1461 (65%) women aged 45–74 years participated in a cross-sectional health examination including an oral glucose tolerance test and physical activity assessment by a self-administered questionnaire. Results Women with screen-detected type 2 diabetes ( n =110) were physically less active than those with known type 2 diabetes ( n =68) with differences in the duration of physical activity ses…
Impact of trace metals from past mining on the aquatic ecosystem: a multi-proxy approach in the Morvan (France).
2014
10 pages; International audience; This study seeks to determine to what extent trace metals resulting from past mining activities are transferred to the aquatic ecosystem, and whether such trace metals still exert deleterious effects on biota. Concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn were measured in streambed sediments, transplanted bryophytes and wild brown trout. This study was conducted at two scales: (i) the entire Morvan Regional Nature Park and (ii) three small watersheds selected for their degree of contamination, based on the presence or absence of past mining sites. The overall quality of streambed sediments was assessed using Sediment Quality Indices (SQIs). According to these standar…
ASSOCIATION BETWEEN LOW BONE MINERAL DENSITY, METABOLIC SYNDROME AND SEX STEROIDS DEFICIENCY IN MEN.
2019
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association between low bone mineral density (BMD), metabolic syndrome (MS) and sex hormones deficiency in men. METHODS: We included in this retrospective study 199 men with osteoporosis or osteopenia and 167 men with normal BMD as controls, aged between 55-85 years old. Patients’ evaluation included: medical history and physical examination, X-ray of thoracic and lumbar spine, measuring BMD at hip and lumbar spine, serum glucose and lipid profile, serum levels of total testosterone (tT), free testosterone (fT) and estradiol (E2). RESULTS: The results revealed a significant association between low BMD and MS (p=0.011). Vertebral fractures were more frequently assoc…

Structural Health Monitoring of delaminated composite structures by the Boundary Element method
2012
Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) for composite materials is becoming a primary task due to their extended use in safety critical applications. Different methods, based on the use of piezoelectric transducers, strain memory alloys as well as of fibre optics, has been successfully proposed to detect and monitor damage in composite structural components with particular attention focused on delamination cracks. In the present paper a Structural Health Monitoring model based on the use of piezoelectric sensors, already proposed by the authors for isotropic damaged components, is extended to delaminated composite structures. The dynamic behavior of the host damaged structure and the bonded piez…
