This paper examines the effect of the polytechnic reform on geographical mobility. A polytechnic, higher education reform took place in Finland in the 1990s. It gradually transformed former vocational colleges into polytechnics and also brought higher education to regions that did not have a university before. This expansion of higher education provides exogenous variation in the regional supply of higher education. The reform raised the mobility of high school graduates across local labour markets in the years after they had completed their secondary studies, which indicated increased mobility between high school and post-secondary education. Why Finnish polytechnics reject top applicants

I use a panel of higher education clearinghouse data to study the centralized assignment of applicants to Finnish polytechnics. Many top applicants remain completely unassigned each year. The same applicants' future applications reveal that many of them should have been admitted to a different program immediately. The application system, however, discourages applicants from applying to multiple programs within the same year, while at the same time leaving them in the dark on the set of programs willing to admit them. Improvements to the application system have the potential to substantially reduce reapplications, thereby shortening long queues into Finnish higher education. peerReviewed

Tutkimuksessa kuvataan Humanistisen ammattikorkeakoulun opiskelijoiden ko-kemuksia henkilökohtaisesta opintojen ohjauksesta. Aineisto koostuu 23:n syksyllä 2003 aloittaneen opiskelijan kirjoitelmista, joissa käsiteltiin opiskeluaikaisia hopsauskokemuksia. Tutkimuksen lähestymistapa on fenomenologinen. Aineiston analyysi tehtiin Giorgin fenomenologisen psykologian viisivaiheisen analyysime-netelmän mukaan. Models for the development of generic skills in Finnish higher education

This article examines how Finnish universities and other higher education institutes have responded to the challenges posed by rapid changes in the world of work and societies all over Europe, particularly with reference to the development of generic skills. The data were collected by means of individual and group interviews at three Finnish higher education institutes, including two universities and one university of applied sciences. The interviews involved 63 persons in charge of management, development and teaching at these institutes. Back to School : Labor-Market Returns to Higher Vocational Schooling

This paper examines the labor-market returns to a new form of postsecondary vocational education: vocational master's degrees. We use individual fixed effects models on a matched sample of students and non-students from Finland to capture any time-invariant differences across individuals. We find that attendance in vocational master's programs leads to an earnings increase of more than seven percent five years after entry. The estimated effect remains positive even if selection on unobservables is twice as strong as selection on observables. A polytechnic, higher education reform took place in Finland in the 1990s. It gradually transformed former vocational colleges into polytechnics and expanded higher education to all Finnish regions. We implement instrumental variables estimators that exploit the exogenous variation in the regional availability of polytechnic education together with matriculation exam scores. Our IV results show that polytechnic graduates have a higher migration probability than those of vocational college graduates. Tutkimukseni tarkoituksena oli tutkia liikunnanohjaajaopiskelijoiden (AMK) seikkailuko-kemuksia kahdella melontaretkellä. Tutkimuksen kohderyhmän muodosti päijäthämäläisen ammattikorkeakoulun liikuntamatkailun ja luontoliikunnan opintoihin suuntautuneet lii-kunnanohjaajaopiskelijat (N=12). Tutkimuksessani tutkin tarkemmin kuuden (n= 6) opiske-lijan kokemuksia laadullisin menetelmin. Tavoitteena oli selvittää millaisia kokemuksia opiskelijat saivat autenttisessa luontoympäristössä.
