Evaluation of p53, Caspase-3, Bcl-2, and Ki-67 markers in oral squamous cell carcinoma and premalignant epithelium in a sample from Alava Province (S…
2013
Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine whether alterations in the expression of p53, caspase-3 Bcl-2, and ki-67 appear early in premalignant oral epithelium and show clonal behavior. Study Design: Samples from 41 tumors with their adjacent non-tumor epithelia were immunohistochemically analyzed using monoclonal antibodies that recognize p53, caspase-3, Bcl-2, and Ki-67 Results: A statistically significant association was found between the expression in tumor and adjacent epithelium of p53, caspase-3, and Bcl-2 but not of k-67. A significant association was observed between the expression of ki-67 and p53 in both localizations. In non-tumor (premalignant) epithelium samples…
The expression of heat shock proteins 27 and 105 in squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue and relationship with clinicopathological index
2010
Introduction: In oral cavity, the tongue is the most common site prone to development of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Considering malignant transformation as a cellular stress, the expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs) may be affected in this process. In this study we assessed the expression of HSP105 and HSP27 as two of the most interested stress proteins and investigated their relationship with grade and stage of the tongue SCC. Material and Methods: Fifty-six specimens including 31 early and 25 advanced tongue SCC were gathered. All specimens were graded histologically from I to III. Sixteen sections of normal oral mucosa were used as control group. The cellularity and intensity of …
The interval since first symptoms until diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma in the head and neck region is still a problem in southern Brazil.
2020
Background The aim was to examine the interval since first symptoms until final diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in the head and neck region in southern Brazil. Material and Methods The individuals were prospectively selected and underwent anamnesis, physical examination and interview in the first medical consultation at a Cancer Hospital from south of Brazil. Results From 488 patients who underwent clinical examination, 105 were included in the study with diagnosis of SCC. Patients average interval from first symptoms to final diagnosis was 152 days (median 86; max:1105; min: 1), the average professional interval was 108 days (median: 97; max:525; min: 1) , and the average total …

Italian Euromelanoma Day Screening Campaign (2005-2007) and the planning of melanoma screening strategies.
2011
Although no study has definitively shown that unfocused screening of skin cancer is effective, many campaigns have been organized with the aim of increasing awareness on melanoma risk factors. The objective of this study was to analyse the results of the Skin Cancer Screening Day in Italy during the period 2005-2007, to determine the priorities for melanoma control plans in a Mediterranean country. A total of 5002 patients were screened by dermatologists in 31 cities. Individuals who considered themselves to have many naevi and those with a family history of melanoma showed a higher number of common and atypical naevi. Ten melanomas, 20 basal cell carcinomas and two squamous cell carcinomas…
Integrated quantitative proteomic and transcriptomic analysis of lung tumor and control tissue: a lung cancer showcase
2015
Proteomics analysis of paired cancer and control tissue can be applied to investigate pathological processes in tumors. Advancements in data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry allow for highly reproducible quantitative analysis of complex proteomic patterns. Optimized sample preparation workflows enable integrative multi-omics studies from the same tissue specimens. We performed ion mobility enhanced, data-independent acquisition MS to characterize the proteome of 21 lung tumor tissues including adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) as compared to control lung tissues of the same patient each. Transcriptomic data were generated for the same specimens. The quantitative prot…
Proteomic identification of the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein K as irradiation responsive protein related to migration
2014
Abstract Irradiation resistance is a major obstacle of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) therapy, limiting treatment success and patient survival. The aim of our experiments was to identify irradiation-regulated proteins as potential drug targets. Two established HNSCC cell lines (HNSCCUM-01T and HNSCCUM-02T) were treated with a single 8 Gy (Gray) fraction of irradiation. Changes in cellular protein expression were studied after 24 h by means of 2D-electrophoresis and MALDI–TOF-mass spectrometry. Ninety-four differentially expressed proteins were identified. The expression levels of four proteins were regulated similarly in both cell lines after irradiation treatment, i.e., GRP7…
Gemcitabine and cisplatin versus vinorelbine and cisplatin versus ifosfamide+gemcitabine followed by vinorelbine and cisplatin versus vinorelbine and…
2003
Abstract Purpose: we carried out a phase III randomized trial to compare vinorelbine–cisplatin regimen to gemcitabine–cisplatin regimen, and to a sequential administration of gemcitabine–ifosfamide followed by vinorelbine–cisplatin or the opposite sequence of vinorelbine–cisplatin followed by ifosfamide–gemcitabine according to the ‘worst drug rule’ hypothesis in patients with locally advanced unresectable stage IIIB or metastatic stage IV non-small cell lung cancer. The primary endpoint was survival parameters, while secondary endpoints included analysis of response rates and toxicity. Patients and methods: patients were randomized to receive: (a) gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2 on days 1, 8 and 15…
Establishment and comparative characterization of novel squamous cell non-small cell lung cancer cell lines and their corresponding tumor tissue.
2010
Abstract Background Cell lines play an important role for studying tumor biology and novel therapeutic agents. Particularly in pulmonary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) the availability of cell lines is limited and knowledge about their representativeness for corresponding tumor tissue is scanty. Materials and methods We established three novel SCC cell lines from fresh tumor tissue of 28 donors, including 8 SCC. Two cell lines were derived from different localizations of the same donor, i.e. primary tumor and lymph node metastasis. This represents a so far unique combination in lung cancer. The genotypes, gene expression profiles and mutational status of epidermal growth factor receptor ( EG…
