Dissipative rogue waves: extreme pulses generated by passively mode-locked lasers.

We study numerically rogue waves in dissipative systems, taking as an example a unidirectional fiber laser in a nonstationary regime of operation. The choice of specific set of parameters allows the laser to generate a chaotic sequence of pulses with a random distribution of peak amplitudes. The probability density function for the intensity maxima has an elevated tail at higher intensities. We have found that the probability of producing extreme pulses in this setup is higher than in any other system considered so far. © 2011 American Physical Society.
Phase joint transform sequential correlator for nonlinear binary correlations

We study the performance of nonlinear optical correlations using a joint transform correlator that operates in phase-only spatial light modulation at input joint transform plane. Amplitude input nonlinear optical time sequential correlations have shown better discrimination and noise robustness than conventional linear correlations. Those nonlinear correlations are based on decomposing the reference and the target into binary slices and to add the contribution of all linear correlations between them. Apodization of imaging systems by means of a random spatially nonstationary absorbing screen

The amplitude impulse response (AIR) of coherent imaging systems with random binary apodizers is analyzed. Formulas for the mean value and the variance of the AIR are derived for two statistical one-dimensional models of apodizers: (1) nonuniform low-density shot noise and (2) a nonuniform unipolar synchronous random process. We show that for both models a high signal-to-noise ratio is achieved within the central peak and the low-order sidelobes of the AIR. Apodizers based on the second model permit higher values of the signal-to-noise ratio than those based on the first one.

Abstract Metasurfaces, the 2D form of metamaterials with their ability in phase, amplitude and polarization manipulation are widely used in designing optical devices. Efforts to find proper photonic components in the terahertz (THz) range of frequency lead us to adopt metasurfaces as their constituent elements. Here, we conceived a broadband THz lens with an adjustable number and arrangement of focal points. Realization of a robust single-parameter quantized charge pump

This paper describes a novel scheme for quantized charge pumping based on single-parameter modulation. The device is realized in an AlGaAs-GaAs gated nanowire. A particular advantage of this realization is that operation in the quantized regime can be achieved in a potentially large range of amplitude and dc off-set of the driving signal. This feature together with the simple configuration might enable large scale parallel operation of many such devices.
Topology of adiabatic passage

We examine the topology of eigenenergy surfaces characterizing the population transfer processes based on adiabatic passage. We show that this topology is the essential feature for the analysis of the population transfers and the prediction of its final result. We reinterpret diverse known processes, such as stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP), frequency-chirped adiabatic passage and Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passage. Moreover, using this picture, we display new related possibilities of transfer. Crumpling of a stiff tethered membrane.

first-principles numerical simulation model for crumpling of a stiff tethered membrane is introduced. In our model membranes, wrinkles, ridge formation, ridge collapse, as well as the initiation of stiffness divergence, are observed. The ratio of the amplitude and wave length of the wrinkles, and the scaling exponent of the stiffness divergence, are consistent with both theory and experiment. We observe that close to the stiffness divergence there appears a crossover beyond which the elastic behavior of a tethered membrane becomes similar to that of dry granular media. It is generally agreed that small impulsive energy bursts called nanoflares are responsible for at least some of the Sun's hot corona, but whether they are the explanation for most of the multimillion-degree plasma has been a matter of ongoing debate. We present here evidence that nanoflares are widespread in an active region observed by the X-Ray Telescope on board the Hinode mission.
